Alex Marquez Edges Pedro Acosta in Closest-Ever MotoGP Sprint Finish at Barcelona
Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, May 16, 2026: The 2026 Barcelona MotoGP weekend delivered one of the most dramatic Sprint races in recent memory as Alex Marquez narrowly defeated Pedro Acosta by just 0.041 seconds in the closest Tissot Sprint finish in MotoGP history.
Racing in front of his home crowd, the BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider held off relentless late pressure from the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star in a breathtaking final lap showdown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium in third, finishing only 0.4 seconds behind the winner in an ultra-competitive Sprint battle.
Acosta Claims Holeshot as Early Chaos Hits KTM and Honda
Starting from pole position, Acosta launched brilliantly into Turn 1 and successfully defended against Alex Marquez to secure the holeshot. However, drama unfolded immediately behind them as KTM rider Brad Binder became involved in contact with Joan Mir.
After a slight nudge from Di Giannantonio on the inside line, Binder lost control and collected Mir, sending both riders crashing out of the Sprint. Race stewards later ruled the incident a racing accident.
Meanwhile, Johann Zarco made a lightning-fast start for Castrol Honda LCR and briefly moved into second position before Alex Marquez fought back. Further behind, Raul Fernandez aggressively carved through the field to challenge the leading group.
Jorge Martin Crashes Out Again in Difficult Barcelona Weekend
The race took another dramatic turn on Lap 3 when reigning world champion Jorge Martin crashed at Turn 10 while battling inside the top five.
The Aprilia Racing rider escaped unhurt, but the incident marked his fourth crash of the Barcelona weekend, dealing another setback to his championship hopes heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Alex Marquez Holds Nerve in Final-Lap Thriller
At the front, Alex Marquez made his decisive move on Acosta at Turn 1 to grab the Sprint lead before Fernandez briefly climbed to second place after overtaking Acosta on Lap 5.
However, Acosta quickly regrouped and reclaimed P2 with four laps remaining, setting up a dramatic chase for victory. As the KTM rider closed the gap in the final stages, Di Giannantonio also entered contention after passing Fernandez with a textbook move into Turn 1 on Lap 11.
The final lap saw Acosta pile immense pressure on Marquez, but the Gresini Ducati rider defended flawlessly through the closing corners to secure an emotional home Sprint victory by less than a tenth of a second.
