SMK Typhoon Gets 4-Star SHARP Safety Rating, Becomes First Indian Helmet Brand to Achieve Rating

Bengaluru, India, August 25, 2026: SMK Helmets has achieved a major milestone in helmet safety, with its popular full-face SMK Typhoon receiving a 4-Star safety rating from SHARP (Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme), the UK’s independent, government-funded helmet safety assessment body.

The achievement makes SMK the first Indian helmet manufacturer to secure a 4-Star SHARP rating, placing the company alongside established international helmet brands that have been evaluated under the same independent testing protocol.

The SHARP rating is regarded as one of the most closely followed independent helmet safety benchmarks globally, as it provides riders with safety information beyond the minimum pass/fail requirements of mandatory helmet certification.

What Is the SHARP Helmet Safety Rating?

Operated by the UK Department for Transport since 2007, SHARP was established to provide consumers with additional information about the real-world safety performance of motorcycle helmets.

Unlike regulatory certification, which establishes whether a helmet meets a defined minimum safety threshold, SHARP differentiates between helmets by subjecting them to a series of controlled impact tests and awarding a rating from one to five stars.

For each helmet model, SHARP purchases helmets directly from UK retailers rather than receiving samples from manufacturers. This ensures that the products tested are the same versions available to consumers.

The programme conducts 32 impact tests across seven helmet samples of different sizes. The helmets are tested at five head impact zones and at three linear impact speeds of 6, 7.5 and 8.5 metres per second to measure the forces transmitted to the head.

The SMK Typhoon’s 4-Star rating therefore represents a strong result under an independent testing programme rather than an internal manufacturer assessment.

SMK Typhoon Gets 4-Star SHARP Rating

Commenting on the achievement, Sidhartha Bhushan Khurana, Managing Director and CEO, SMK, said the SHARP result provides independent validation of the company’s focus on helmet protection and engineering.

He said the Typhoon’s performance reflects SMK’s approach to materials, construction and design, adding that Indian riders should have access to helmets evaluated against the same safety benchmarks as products from established global manufacturers.

The 4-Star SHARP rating is particularly significant for SMK as the company continues to expand its presence outside India.

SMK Expands Global Motorsport Presence

The SHARP achievement comes as SMK continues to build its international profile, including its entry into international motorsport this year as the technical helmet sponsor of the Moto4 Latin Cup.

The company says its motorsport involvement and the Typhoon’s independent SHARP rating reflect years of engineering and testing aimed at developing helmets for both domestic and international markets.

SMK helmets are currently sold in more than 40 countries, giving the Indian manufacturer an expanding global footprint.
