Maharashtra Leads Passenger Vehicle Sales, Uttar Pradesh Tops Two-Wheeler Sales in Q1 FY2026-27

New Delhi, India, August 27, 2026: Maharashtra emerged as India’s top passenger vehicle market in the first quarter of FY2026-27, while Uttar Pradesh led two-wheeler and three-wheeler sales, according to Q1 automotive sales data.

India’s automotive market recorded strong retail volumes across key vehicle segments in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27, with passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles witnessing significant sales across the country.

A total of 12.74 lakh passenger vehicles were sold in India during Q1 FY2026-27. The Western Zone emerged as the leading region, accounting for 3.90 lakh units during the quarter.

Among individual states and Union Territories, Maharashtra recorded the highest passenger vehicle sales at 1.47 lakh units. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, highlighting the continued importance of these states to India’s passenger vehicle market.

Uttar Pradesh leads two-wheeler sales

The two-wheeler segment remained by far the largest volume contributor, with 56.29 lakh units sold across India in Q1 FY2026-27.

The Western Zone led regional two-wheeler sales with 16.61 lakh units.

At the state level, Uttar Pradesh topped two-wheeler sales with 8.82 lakh units during the quarter. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Bihar followed Uttar Pradesh among the leading markets.

The strong performance of Uttar Pradesh underlines the continued importance of two-wheelers for personal mobility in large and geographically diverse markets.

Uttar Pradesh tops three-wheeler sales

India recorded 2.14 lakh three-wheeler sales in Q1 FY2026-27. Unlike passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, the Southern Zone emerged as the leading region, with 0.71 lakh units sold.

Uttar Pradesh once again topped the state rankings, recording 0.26 lakh three-wheeler sales. The state was followed by Gujarat, Karnataka, Bihar and Assam.

The geographical distribution of three-wheeler sales points to continued demand for the segment across both passenger mobility and last-mile transportation applications.

Maharashtra leads commercial vehicle sales

The commercial vehicle segment recorded 2.65 lakh units in sales during Q1 FY2026-27.

The Western Zone led regional sales with 0.91 lakh units.

Maharashtra was the country’s top state for commercial vehicle sales, registering 0.36 lakh units during the quarter. It was followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.

The strong showing by Maharashtra across both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles highlights its position as one of India’s most important automotive markets.

State-wise automotive sales highlight India’s diverse demand

The Q1 FY2026-27 sales data highlights different patterns of automotive demand across India. Maharashtra led passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle sales, while Uttar Pradesh emerged as the leading market for both two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

At the regional level, the Western Zone led passenger vehicle, two-wheeler and commercial vehicle sales, while the Southern Zone was the strongest region for three-wheelers.
