Charles Leclerc Wins 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone After Kimi Antonelli’s Heartbreak
Silverstone, England, July 5, 2026: Charles Leclerc claimed his first victory of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship with a commanding performance in a dramatic British Grand Prix at Silverstone, overcoming late-race tension to lead Ferrari to a podium finish while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli’s victory hopes were dashed by a mechanical problem.
Leclerc made the perfect start from the front row, sweeping past pole-sitter Antonelli into Turn 1. Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton also enjoyed an excellent launch, moving into second as Antonelli slipped to third during the opening laps.
The race featured several early incidents, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri forced to pit at the end of the opening lap after sustaining damage, while Williams driver Alexander Albon’s afternoon unravelled following contact with Oliver Bearman. Albon eventually retired after 43 laps.
At the front, Leclerc maintained a measured pace while Antonelli recovered from his poor getaway by overtaking Hamilton. Mercedes opted for a longer opening stint for the Italian youngster, hoping fresher tyres would give him the advantage in the closing stages.
After Leclerc completed his pit stop, Antonelli briefly inherited the race lead before making his own stop on Lap 36. Although Leclerc regained the lead with an advantage of just under eight seconds, Antonelli appeared poised to challenge on fresher tyres.
However, the race turned dramatically on Lap 41 when Antonelli reported handling problems. Mercedes identified an issue with the left-front wheel shield, forcing the Italian into two additional pit stops. A subsequent five-second penalty for exceeding track limits further compounded his misery, leaving him classified only 16th despite showing race-winning pace.
Ferrari looked set for a dominant one-two finish with Leclerc comfortably ahead of Hamilton until another twist arrived six laps from the finish. Max Verstappen spun into the gravel at Stowe and became stranded, bringing out the Safety Car.
George Russell, who had earlier recovered from a slow puncture by staying out on Medium tyres, inherited second place ahead of Hamilton during the late Safety Car period. With insufficient time to resume racing, the event concluded behind the Safety Car.
Leclerc crossed the finish line after 52 laps to secure the ninth Formula 1 victory of his career, finishing just 0.427 seconds ahead of Russell. Hamilton completed the podium in third, although the Ferrari driver remained under post-race investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement.
McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fourth, while Isack Hadjar delivered another impressive drive to claim fifth for Red Bull. Racing Bulls celebrated a double points finish with Liam Lawson sixth and Arvid Lindblad seventh, while Gabriel Bortoleto added valuable points for Audi in eighth.
Alpine also enjoyed a productive afternoon as Franco Colapinto finished ninth ahead of team-mate Pierre Gasly in 10th. Piastri recovered from his opening-lap setback to finish 11th, narrowly missing the points.
Further down the order, Carlos Sainz finished 12th for Williams, ahead of Haas duo Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon. Sergio Pérez took 15th for Cadillac, with Antonelli eventually finishing 16th after his mechanical troubles. Valtteri Bottas was 17th, while Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll completed the classified finishers one lap behind.
Verstappen was classified 20th following his late accident, while Albon and Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg were the race’s other retirements.
