Zandvoort, Netherlands, August 23, 2026: Lando Norris secured his second consecutive Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season after winning a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, beating Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in a race shaped by an early red flag, changing track conditions and late strategic twists.

The McLaren driver converted pole position into victory after 72 laps, crossing the finish line in 2:04:44.859, with Antonelli 11.536 seconds behind and Russell completing the podium a further 4.370 seconds adrift.

The result gives Norris another major boost in the 2026 F1 championship battle, while Antonelli continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship.

Max Verstappen Crashes Out on Opening Lap

The Dutch Grand Prix began with uncertainty following rain around Zandvoort, although the circuit had dried sufficiently for most drivers to start on slick tyres.

Norris made a clean getaway from pole, but Antonelli immediately jumped Mercedes team-mate Russell to take second place.

The opening lap was then interrupted by a major incident involving home favourite Max Verstappen.

The Red Bull driver lost control in the final corner and spun into the barriers, scattering debris across the circuit and bringing out the red flag. Verstappen’s race ended before he had completed a single lap.

Gabriel Bortoleto also spun during the incident but was able to continue without significant damage.

There was further drama before the restart when Oliver Bearman suffered a technical problem while making his way to the grid.

Antonelli Takes the Lead at the Restart

When racing resumed, Antonelli produced an excellent launch from the standing restart to sweep past Norris into Turn 1.

Oscar Piastri also made progress, moving ahead of Russell to take third place.

Antonelli initially established a useful advantage at the front, but Norris remained within striking distance as the race developed into a strategic battle.

Behind the leading pair, Russell struggled with the balance of his Mercedes and came under pressure from Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Piastri’s challenge was also compromised by a slow pit stop, dropping the McLaren driver behind Russell.

Ferrari Drivers Fight Back

The order continued to change during the middle stages of the race.

On lap 34, Leclerc made an impressive move around the outside of Turn 3 to pass Piastri. Hamilton followed his team-mate through shortly afterwards, putting both Ferraris ahead of the second McLaren.

At the front, Antonelli continued to control the race until the leaders began making their second round of pit stops.

Norris emerged from his final stop more than five seconds behind Antonelli, but the McLaren driver quickly began eating into the Mercedes driver’s advantage.

Antonelli’s rear tyres began to fade, giving Norris the opportunity he needed.

Norris Makes Decisive Move for the Lead

The championship leader made his decisive move on lap 54.

Norris went around the outside of Turn 1 to pass Antonelli and take second place before overtaking Hamilton later in the same lap to regain the lead.

The race then took another strategic twist when Esteban Ocon’s retirement triggered a Virtual Safety Car.

Antonelli and Hamilton used the opportunity to switch to fresh soft tyres, while Norris and Russell stayed out on their hard-compound tyres.

Antonelli subsequently closed rapidly on Russell. Mercedes eventually instructed its drivers to swap positions, allowing Antonelli to move back into second.

However, the fresher tyres were not enough to put Antonelli in a position to challenge Norris.

Norris managed the final laps expertly to take the chequered flag and claim his second consecutive Grand Prix victory and second win of the 2026 season.

Antonelli finished second, with Russell completing the podium for Mercedes.

Hamilton Leads Ferrari to Fourth

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, narrowly missing out on the podium after a strong late-race performance.

Charles Leclerc followed in fifth, while Oscar Piastri recovered to sixth.

Liam Lawson finished seventh for Red Bull despite carrying a 10-second penalty. Nico Hülkenberg delivered another valuable points finish for Audi in eighth, while Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.

Yuki Tsunoda finished 11th, ahead of Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Franco Colapinto, Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz completed the remaining classified finishers.

Antonelli Extends Championship Advantage

Although Norris took the headline victory, Antonelli’s second-place finish was important for the championship.

The Mercedes driver leaves Zandvoort with a 59-point advantage over George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship, according to the supplied championship standings.

Russell’s third-place finish keeps him firmly in the title fight, while Hamilton’s fourth-place result also ensures he remains within reach.

For Norris, meanwhile, the back-to-back victories underline McLaren’s strong form heading into the next phase of the 2026 season.
