Pirelli Confirms Monaco and Barcelona Tyre Choices for Upcoming Formula 1 Races

May 19, 2026: Pirelli has officially revealed the tyre compound selections for the upcoming Formula 1 race weekends in Monaco and Barcelona, with contrasting strategies tailored to the unique demands of each circuit.

The tyre supplier confirmed that the softest compounds in its range will once again be used for the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, while a softer-than-usual selection has been chosen for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona to encourage more strategic variation and pit stops.

Monaco Grand Prix to Use Softest Pirelli Tyres

For the iconic Monaco street circuit, Pirelli has selected the C3 compound as Hard, C4 as Medium and C5 as Soft — the softest trio available in the current Formula 1 tyre range.

The Monte Carlo circuit remains the slowest track on the Formula 1 calendar in terms of average speed. Its narrow layout, tight corners and smooth asphalt surface generate extremely low tyre degradation, making softer compounds the preferred choice.

Overtaking in Monaco is traditionally one of the biggest challenges in Formula 1 due to the limited track width and close barriers, placing a premium on driver precision and qualifying performance.

The low-abrasion street surface means teams are unlikely to experience significant tyre wear during the race weekend, allowing aggressive tyre strategies and longer stints on softer compounds.

Softer Tyre Allocation Confirmed for Barcelona

For the Barcelona race weekend at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Pirelli has opted for a softer tyre range compared to last season.

The Italian manufacturer confirmed the following allocation:

  • C2 as Hard
  • C3 as Medium
  • C4 as Soft

Last year, Barcelona featured compounds one step harder, reflecting the circuit’s reputation as one of the toughest tracks on tyres in Formula 1.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is known for its long, high-speed corners and sustained lateral loads, which place significant stress on tyres. Combined with high ambient temperatures, the track often produces elevated thermal degradation throughout the race weekend.

Pirelli explained that the softer compound choice is aimed at increasing strategic variety and potentially creating more pit-stop opportunities during the Grand Prix.

Pirelli Targets More Exciting Formula 1 Race Strategies

The decision reflects Formula 1’s continued push for more dynamic racing and unpredictable strategy battles across the season.

With Pirelli’s revised tyre range offering improved consistency in 2026, the company believes softer compounds can now be used more effectively at traditionally demanding circuits like Barcelona without excessive performance drop-off.

The move could lead teams to consider alternative race strategies, including two-stop approaches, which may increase overtaking opportunities and add unpredictability to the Spanish Grand Prix.

As Formula 1 heads into two dramatically different race weekends — the tight streets of Monaco and the high-speed demands of Barcelona — tyre management is once again expected to play a decisive role in race outcomes.
