Marco Bezzecchi Delivers Dream Mugello Victory as Aprilia Secures Historic Italian GP 1-2

Mugello, Italy, May 31, 2026: Marco Bezzecchi produced one of the finest performances of his MotoGP career to win the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, delighting a record-breaking home crowd and leading Aprilia Racing to a sensational 1-2 finish on home soil.

The Italian championship leader was virtually flawless throughout Sunday’s race, beating teammate Jorge Martin to the chequered flag as Aprilia celebrated a landmark result at its home Grand Prix. Ducati Lenovo Team rider Francesco Bagnaia completed the podium after fending off a dramatic last-lap challenge from Trackhouse MotoGP Team’s Ai Ogura.

Bagnaia Takes Early Control

Starting from pole position, Bezzecchi launched well off the line, but it was Martin who initially grabbed the lead at Turn 1. Sprint race winner Raul Fernandez suffered an early setback after running wide at the opening corner, dropping from third to 17th place.

Bezzecchi wasted little time reclaiming the initiative, overtaking Martin at Turn 4 on the opening lap. Meanwhile, Bagnaia thrilled the Italian fans by charging into podium contention before taking the lead at San Donato on Lap 3.

The three-time Mugello winner appeared poised for another home triumph as he headed Bezzecchi and Martin through the opening stages. Behind them, an intense battle developed between Marc Marquez, Pedro Acosta, Fermin Aldeguer and Ai Ogura.

Bezzecchi Turns Up the Pressure

As the race approached its halfway point, Martin began reducing the gap to the leading duo while Bezzecchi intensified pressure on Bagnaia.

The decisive moment arrived with 10 laps remaining when Bezzecchi executed a clean pass into Turn 1 to reclaim the lead. Once ahead, the Aprilia rider immediately pulled clear, opening nearly a one-second advantage over Bagnaia.

Martin soon joined the battle and overtook Bagnaia on Lap 16, completing an Aprilia 1-2 and leaving the Ducati star defending the final podium position.

Late Drama in Battle for Third

While Bezzecchi cruised towards victory and Martin secured second place, the fight for the final podium spot intensified dramatically.

Ogura produced another impressive recovery ride after starting 13th on the grid and rapidly closed on Bagnaia during the closing laps. The Japanese rookie was aided by fierce battles further back involving Acosta, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marc Marquez.

On the final lap, Ogura launched an attack at Bucine, the final corner, and briefly appeared to have stolen third place. However, Bagnaia responded brilliantly with a cutback move and won the drag race to the finish line by an astonishingly narrow margin of just 0.034 seconds.

Historic Home Success for Aprilia

The victory marked a dream result for Bezzecchi, who secured a memorable win in front of his home fans aboard Italian machinery at Italy’s most iconic circuit.

Aprilia’s 1-2 finish further strengthened the manufacturer’s championship challenge, with Bezzecchi extending his lead in the riders’ standings to 17 points over teammate Martin heading into the next round in Hungary.
