Aragon, Spain, August 29, 2026: Marco Bezzecchi produced a sensational qualifying performance at MotorLand Aragon to beat reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez to pole position for the Michelin Grand Prix of Aragon.

Marco Bezzecchi delivered a stunning display of speed and resilience at MotorLand Aragon, securing pole position for the 2026 MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix after setting two laps in the 1:44s.

The Aprilia Racing rider, despite being bruised, produced a new all-time lap record of 1:44.962 to edge reigning World Champion Marc Marquez by just 0.089 seconds in a thrilling Q2 battle.

Alex Marquez completed the front row, ensuring that both Marquez brothers will start Sunday’s Aragon Grand Prix among the leading contenders.

Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez deliver Q2 thriller

Marc Marquez immediately set the benchmark when Q2 got underway, posting a 1:45.136 on his opening flying lap. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider’s effort was itself a new all-time lap record at MotorLand Aragon.

Bezzecchi, however, responded emphatically.

The Aprilia rider became the first man to break into the 1:44s, producing a sensational 1:44.984 before improving further to his eventual pole-setting time of 1:44.962.

Alex Marquez briefly moved into second position, but it quickly became a two-rider battle between Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez for pole.

Marc remained within striking distance during his second run despite running slightly deep into Turn 1. Through the third sector, the reigning World Champion was only 0.091 seconds away from Bezzecchi’s provisional pole time.

The gap at the line was just over half a tenth before Bezzecchi raised the benchmark once again.

Marc Marquez comes close but misses pole

Bezzecchi’s final improvement extended his advantage to 0.089 seconds, leaving Marc Marquez with one final opportunity to reclaim pole.

The Ducati rider began his final flying lap strongly, although he was already 0.141 seconds down after the opening sector. Marc then clawed almost all of the deficit back, reducing the gap to just 0.013 seconds.

The battle appeared to be heading for another dramatic conclusion, but a big front-end moment through Turn 14 ended Marc’s challenge.

The front Michelin tyre could not provide the grip he needed, allowing Bezzecchi to secure pole position and deny Marc Marquez a Saturday morning P1 at one of his historically strongest circuits.

Bezzecchi leads Marquez brothers on front row

Bezzecchi’s pole position puts him in an excellent position heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix, while Marc Marquez will start alongside him on the front row.

Alex Marquez will complete the first row on the BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP Ducati, keeping him firmly in contention for both the race victory and the championship points battle.

The second row will feature two Aprilia machines.

Raul Fernandez continued his impressive form to qualify fourth, with the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider joined by Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin in fifth.

Pedro Acosta will start sixth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing despite crashing at Turn 8 during Q2. The KTM rider was on a personal best lap when he went down but still retained a place on the second row.

Bagnaia and Moreira progress through Q1

Earlier, Francesco Bagnaia and rookie Diogo Moreira successfully progressed from Q1 into the pole-position shootout.

Moreira initially led the way after the opening flying laps, with former Aragon winner Bagnaia close behind. Brad Binder was just 0.039 seconds away from the top two positions.

Bagnaia responded immediately on the second run to move into P1, while Moreira’s qualifying challenge ended when the Pro Honda LCR rider crashed at Turn 2 with two minutes remaining.

Joan Mir attempted to challenge the top two with red sectors in the opening parts of the lap, but he could not maintain the pace through the second half.

As a result, Moreira survived in second and Bagnaia progressed to Q2.

Zarco impresses on MotoGP return

Fabio Di Giannantonio qualified seventh for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, while Bagnaia will start eighth for Ducati Lenovo Team.

Johann Zarco continued his impressive return to action by qualifying ninth for Castrol Honda LCR. The experienced Frenchman has shown strong pace since returning from his three-month layoff.

Moreira completed the Q2 top 10 after progressing through Q1.

Fermin Aldeguer and Franco Morbidelli will occupy the remaining positions on Row 4.
