Formula E Confirms Madrid Jarama as Venue for Historic GEN4 Race Car Debut Ahead of 2026/27 Season
Madrid, Spain, June 3, 2026: Formula E and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile have announced that the iconic Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE will host the championship’s official pre-season testing programme from November 16 to 20, 2026, marking the first public on-track appearance of the revolutionary GEN4 race car.
The five-day test will serve as the official launch event for the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season and provide teams, drivers and manufacturers with their first opportunity to evaluate the most advanced electric race car ever developed for the series.
GEN4 Set to Redefine Electric Motorsport
The upcoming GEN4 machine represents the biggest technological leap in Formula E’s history and is expected to usher in a new era of high-performance electric racing.
Capable of exceeding 335 km/h and accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, the GEN4 will become the fastest Formula E single-seater ever built. The new generation car features permanent all-wheel drive and delivers up to 600 kW of power in ATTACK MODE, significantly enhancing performance compared to previous generations.
Beyond outright speed, the GEN4 has been engineered to improve efficiency and sustainability, reinforcing Formula E’s position as a global showcase for cutting-edge electric vehicle technology.
The new race car is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating innovation within the broader electric mobility sector while raising the performance benchmark for electric motorsport worldwide.
Madrid Retains Key Role in Formula E’s Future
The decision to return to Madrid follows the success of the 2026 CUPRA Raval Madrid E-Prix, which took place on March 21 and received positive feedback from teams, drivers and fans.
Formula E Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo described the venue as the ideal location for such a landmark moment in the championship’s evolution.
Longo noted that Madrid had already proven itself as an outstanding Formula E destination and said the combination of the circuit’s rich motorsport heritage and forward-looking vision made it the perfect stage for the debut of the championship’s next-generation race car.
He also highlighted that the pre-season test will represent the first opportunity for fans and stakeholders to witness all teams and manufacturers showcasing their GEN4 machinery ahead of its competitive debut.
Historic Circuit Ready for New Era
Located on the outskirts of Spain’s capital, Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE remains one of the country’s most historic racing venues, having hosted major international motorsport events for decades.
Ignacio Fernández, Director of Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE, said Formula E’s decision to return demonstrates the confidence that the championship continues to place in the venue’s infrastructure, operational capabilities and experience in delivering world-class events.
The circuit’s technical layout is expected to provide a valuable testing environment for teams as they seek to understand the characteristics of the all-new GEN4 platform.
FIA Highlights Importance of Pre-Season Testing
Pablo Martino emphasised that the Madrid test will play a vital role in helping teams and manufacturers prepare for the championship’s next chapter.
According to Martino, the successful inaugural Madrid E-Prix earlier this year demonstrated the venue’s suitability for Formula E competition, combining a challenging circuit layout with modern facilities.
He added that the November sessions will provide teams, drivers and manufacturers with their first collective opportunity to unlock the performance potential of the new-generation car before the start of the season.
Manufacturers Face Crucial Development Window
The GEN4 era is expected to intensify competition among Formula E manufacturers as teams adapt to the championship’s most powerful and technologically sophisticated platform yet.
The Madrid tests will allow manufacturers to gather critical performance and reliability data while evaluating the benefits of all-wheel-drive systems, increased power outputs and advanced energy management technologies.
With the championship entering a transformative phase, the testing programme could offer the first indications of the competitive pecking order heading into the 2026/27 season.
Formula E Calendar Announcement Approaching
While attention is currently focused on the GEN4 debut, Formula E has also confirmed that the complete 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar will be unveiled on June 23.
The announcement is expected to provide further details on the championship’s global expansion plans and the venues that will host the inaugural season of the GEN4 era.
As Formula E prepares to enter its most ambitious chapter yet, the historic Jarama circuit will serve as the backdrop for a pivotal moment in electric racing history when the next generation of electric motorsport technology finally takes to the track.
