Marc Marquez Dominates Hungarian MotoGP Sprint to Return to Winning Ways as Bezzecchi Extends Championship Lead
Balaton Park, Hungary, June 6, 2026: Marc Marquez delivered a commanding performance in the MotoGP Hungarian Grand Prix Sprint Race, securing a lights-to-flag victory and maintaining his perfect winning record on Hungarian soil. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider controlled proceedings from pole position to claim his 18th career Sprint victory and reignite his momentum in the 2026 MotoGP season.
Marquez crossed the line ahead of Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, while championship leader Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium for Aprilia Racing, extending his advantage at the top of the riders’ standings to 20 points.
Marquez Untouchable from Pole Position
Starting from pole, Marquez made the perfect launch and immediately established control of the Sprint race. The reigning MotoGP World Champion led the opening lap ahead of Acosta, while Bezzecchi made an impressive start from sixth on the grid to move into third place.
As the race unfolded, Marquez steadily built his advantage, opening up a two-second lead over Acosta by the halfway stage. The Spaniard never looked under pressure and managed the race expertly to secure a comfortable victory.
The win marked Marquez’s return to the top step of the podium and saw him equal Jorge Martin’s all-time MotoGP Sprint race victory tally with 18 wins.
Bezzecchi Strengthens Championship Position
While Marquez celebrated victory, championship leader Bezzecchi continued his impressive consistency with a valuable third-place finish. The Italian rider faced intense pressure throughout the race from Raul Fernandez but defended brilliantly to secure his second Sprint podium of the season.
The podium result allows Bezzecchi to increase his championship lead to 20 points heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix, further strengthening his title challenge.
Acosta Continues Strong Form
Pedro Acosta once again demonstrated his growing maturity and racecraft with a controlled second-place finish. The KTM star was unable to match Marquez’s pace at the front but comfortably secured nine championship points and another strong podium result.
Acosta’s performance underlined KTM’s competitiveness at Balaton Park and keeps the young Spaniard firmly in the championship conversation.
Battles Rage Behind the Podium
One of the race’s most entertaining contests involved rookie sensation Fermin Aldeguer, who initially challenged Bezzecchi for third place. However, a major front-end scare at Turn 9 on Lap 3 cost him valuable time and positions.
The Ducati rider later made another mistake while attempting to chase down Fernandez, ultimately settling for fifth place despite showing podium-contending pace throughout the Sprint.
Fernandez delivered a strong ride to finish fourth for SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP, ending just over a second shy of a podium finish.
Martin Recovers After Early Error
Aprilia’s Jorge Martin endured a challenging Sprint after making an early braking mistake while attempting to pass Honda’s Diogo Moreira at Turn 9. The reigning 2024 MotoGP World Champion ran wide and lost valuable time but avoided any penalty.
Martin eventually recovered to sixth place after successfully passing Moreira later in the race, salvaging important points for his championship campaign.
Bagnaia Grabs Final Point
Further down the order, Enea Bastianini produced one of the standout recovery rides of the Sprint, climbing from 14th on the grid to finish eighth for Red Bull KTM Tech3.
Francesco Bagnaia secured the final championship point in ninth position, narrowly holding off Fabio Di Giannantonio in a close battle for the top nine.
Meanwhile, Ai Ogura finished 11th, while World Superbike legend Toprak Razgatlioglu emerged as Yamaha’s highest-placed rider in 13th position.
