Kimi Antonelli Secures Monaco GP Pole Position After Thrilling Qualifying Duel with Max Verstappen

Monte Carlo, Monaco, June 6, 2026: Mercedes rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable 2026 Formula 1 campaign by claiming pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix after edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in a dramatic qualifying session around the iconic streets of Monte Carlo.

The Italian championship leader delivered a stunning final lap of 1:12.051 to secure pole by just 0.043 seconds, marking his fourth pole position in the last five Grands Prix and reinforcing his credentials as the title favourite.

Antonelli Leads Mercedes Revival in Monaco

After Ferrari dominated Friday’s practice sessions with one-two finishes, Mercedes mounted an impressive turnaround on Saturday. Antonelli topped final practice and carried that momentum into qualifying, where he showcased exceptional pace when it mattered most.

His first Q3 effort of 1:12.375 was enough to temporarily secure top spot, narrowly ahead of Verstappen by just one-thousandth of a second. However, the final moments of qualifying produced a dramatic battle for pole position.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, racing on home soil, struggled to put together a clean lap early in Q3 after abandoning his first flying lap following a mistake at Massenet. The Monegasque driver eventually posted a lap good enough for provisional pole before Verstappen responded with a brilliant 1:12.094.

The Dutchman appeared set to claim pole until Antonelli delivered three personal-best sectors on his final run, including a crucial middle sector that proved decisive in securing the top starting position.

Ferrari Settles for Second Row

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton emerged as Ferrari’s leading qualifier, securing third place with a lap of 1:12.279, while hometown favourite Leclerc had to settle for fourth after brushing the barriers during his final attempt.

Red Bull youngster Isack Hadjar impressed with fifth place, while Mercedes’ George Russell endured a comparatively disappointing session and will start sixth, nearly four-tenths slower than his teammate.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris locked out the fourth row in seventh and eighth respectively, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson completed the top ten.

Q2 Heartbreak for Williams and Audi

The battle for Q3 places was equally intense. Williams driver Carlos Sainz narrowly missed out on the final shootout and will start 12th behind teammate Alexander Albon, who secured 11th.

Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg qualified 13th ahead of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, while Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad rounded out the Q2 participants in 15th.

Gabriel Bortoleto failed to advance from Q1 and will start 16th on the grid.

Red Flag Drama Disrupts Q1

The opening qualifying segment was interrupted by a red flag after an Audi driver clipped the inside barrier and stopped on track with just over two minutes remaining.

The stoppage triggered a frantic conclusion as drivers scrambled for track position on Monaco’s notoriously narrow streets. Leclerc topped the session, while several drivers managed last-gasp improvements to avoid elimination.

Haas endured a difficult afternoon, with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman both eliminated in Q1. Cadillac’s Sergio Perez qualified between the Haas duo in 18th, while teammate Valtteri Bottas finished 20th.

Aston Martin suffered its worst qualifying performance of the season, with Fernando Alonso qualifying 21st and Lance Stroll 22nd, locking out the final row of the grid.

Antonelli Targets Monaco Glory

With overtaking notoriously difficult around Monaco’s tight street circuit, Antonelli’s pole position could prove crucial as he seeks another victory in his breakthrough championship campaign. However, Verstappen’s front-row start ensures the reigning world champion remains firmly in contention for what promises to be a fascinating Monaco Grand Prix.
