Jorge Martin Dominates French GP Sprint at Le Mans as Marc Marquez Suffers Injury Blow
Le Mans, France, May 09, 2026: Defending champion Jorge Martin made a sensational return to form with a commanding victory in the French GP Tissot Sprint at the iconic French Grand Prix in Le Mans on Saturday, while reigning world champion Marc Marquez crashed heavily and was ruled out of Sunday’s Grand Prix due to injury.
The packed crowd at Le Mans witnessed a near-perfect performance from the Aprilia Racing rider, who stormed from eighth on the grid to seize the lead on the opening lap before controlling the race from the front.
Martin Produces Stunning Opening Lap Charge
Starting from P8, Martin delivered one of the best launches of the 2026 MotoGP season. The Spaniard brilliantly swept around the outside of championship leader Marco Bezzecchi, polesitter Francesco Bagnaia, and Marc Marquez through Turn 3 before taking the lead into Turn 4.
Bagnaia initially settled into third place, while home favourite Fabio Quartararo climbed to fourth in front of the passionate French crowd. Marc Marquez, meanwhile, endured a difficult opening lap after starting from the middle of the front row, slipping down to fifth.
The struggles continued for the Ducati star as Pedro Acosta and Joan Mir overtook him in the early stages, pushing the reigning champion back to seventh place by Lap 3.
Bagnaia Secures P2 as Bezzecchi Extends Championship Lead
Martin quickly built a gap at the front after Bezzecchi made an error at Turn 7, allowing Bagnaia to move into second place. From there, the Aprilia rider steadily increased his advantage, stretching his lead beyond 1.5 seconds during the closing laps.
Bagnaia held firm in second to claim another Sprint podium for the Ducati Lenovo Team, while Bezzecchi completed the podium in third and strengthened his championship advantage.
Acosta’s aggressive early overtakes paid dividends as the KTM rider secured fourth place ahead of Quartararo, who delighted the home fans with a strong fifth-place finish.
Mir narrowly missed out on the top five in sixth, while rookie sensation Diogo Moreira scored his first-ever MotoGP Sprint point with a ninth-place finish for Pro Honda LCR.
Marc Marquez Ruled Out After Heavy Crash
The biggest drama unfolded on the penultimate lap when Marc Marquez crashed heavily at Turn 13. The Spaniard initially saved the front-end collapse with an incredible recovery attempt, but the rear of the bike snapped violently, throwing him over the machine.
Although Marquez walked away from the crash, medical checks later confirmed a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The Ducati rider has been declared unfit for Sunday’s French Grand Prix and will travel to Madrid for surgery. Reports also confirmed that his planned shoulder surgery will now be brought forward, forcing him to miss next week’s Catalan GP as well.
The injury marks a major setback in the 2026 MotoGP title fight and could significantly impact the championship battle moving forward.
