Jorge Martin Wins British MotoGP Sprint as Aprilia Secures Historic 1-2-3 at Silverstone

Silverstone, UK, August 8, 2026: Jorge Martin extended his MotoGP championship lead with a dominant lights-to-flag victory in the Tissot Sprint at the 2026 Qatar Airways British Grand Prix, while Aprilia completed a historic 1-2-3 finish at Silverstone.

Martin (Aprilia Racing) converted pole position into his third Tissot Sprint victory of the 2026 MotoGP season, leading every lap of the 10-lap contest to strengthen his grip on the World Championship.

Ai Ogura (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team) finished second after a composed ride, limiting the damage in the title fight, while a heroic Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) claimed third to complete the podium.

The result marked the first-ever MotoGP Sprint 1-2-3 for Aprilia, capping a remarkable Saturday at Silverstone for the manufacturer.

Martin’s victory also extends his championship advantage over Ogura to 17 points heading into Sunday’s 20-lap British Grand Prix.

Martin makes perfect start from pole

Starting from pole after setting a new Silverstone lap record in qualifying, Martin made the perfect getaway and led the field into Turn 1.

Ogura held onto second, while Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) made an aggressive opening move to climb into third.

Behind them, Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez immediately began battling for position. By the end of the opening lap, the reigning World Champion had moved ahead of Bezzecchi and into fourth.

Qualifying runner-up Raul Fernandez, meanwhile, endured a difficult opening lap and slipped back to sixth.

Martin quickly began to establish a gap at the front, but Ogura remained firmly in contention. Di Giannantonio even made a move on the Trackhouse rider at Turn 3 on Lap 2, but Ogura responded immediately to retain second.

By Lap 4, Martin’s advantage over Ogura stood at around 0.5 seconds, meaning the championship’s top two were once again running together at the front.

Raul Fernandez crashes as Bezzecchi charges

The Sprint then delivered a major setback for Raul Fernandez.

Running directly behind Bezzecchi, the Trackhouse rider lost the front at Turn 4 – The Loop – and crashed out of the contest.

Fernandez’s mistake promoted Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) to sixth, with the 2025 Silverstone Sprint winner immediately turning his attention towards Bezzecchi.

Bezzecchi, however, had other plans.

The Aprilia rider launched his attack on Marc Marquez at Copse, passing the Ducati rider on the exit of the fast left-hander to move into fourth.

Alex Marquez then completed his own move on his brother at Woodcote, demoting Marc Marquez to sixth.

It was becoming increasingly clear that the Ducati rider was struggling for rear grip.

Bezzecchi hunts down Di Giannantonio

While Martin continued to control the race at the front, the battle for the final podium position was becoming increasingly intense.

Bezzecchi steadily closed the gap to compatriot Di Giannantonio, taking more than a second out of the VR46 rider.

With four laps remaining, Bezzecchi made his move at Copse and completed the overtake for third.

The pass proved crucial as Di Giannantonio’s pace faded dramatically in the closing stages.

Marc Marquez was also struggling badly with rear grip, leaving the six-time MotoGP champion vulnerable to attacks from behind.

Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was next to attack, and with around one and a half laps remaining, the KTM rider moved ahead of Marquez.

Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) soon followed, dropping the Ducati rider further down the order.

Marc Marquez fights to salvage a single point

The final lap brought even more pain for Marc Marquez.

Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) passed the Ducati rider and pushed him down to ninth.

Marquez managed to hold onto the final championship point, crossing the line just 0.027 seconds ahead of the rider behind him.

The result represents a significant setback in the championship battle, with Martin gaining three points over Ogura and Bezzecchi moving ahead of Marquez in the standings.

Bezzecchi moves into third in championship

Martin’s Sprint victory increases his championship advantage over Ogura to 17 points heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Ogura’s second-place finish ensures that the Japanese rider keeps the damage to a minimum, while Bezzecchi’s emotional third place sees him move into third in the World Championship ahead of Marc Marquez.

The result was particularly significant for Bezzecchi, who has been dealing with injury problems and endured a difficult period in recent races.

The Aprilia rider visibly showed his emotion after climbing off the bike, having dug deep to secure a podium finish in the Sprint.

For Aprilia, meanwhile, the result was one for the history books.

With Martin taking victory, Ogura finishing second and Bezzecchi completing the podium, Aprilia celebrated its first 1-2-3 finish in a MotoGP Sprint.

It was the perfect conclusion to a qualifying session that had already seen Aprilia-powered machines lock out the entire front row.

Alex Marquez led the Ducati challenge in fourth, finishing ahead of Di Giannantonio in fifth.

Acosta brought the KTM home in sixth, followed by Mir in seventh and Morbidelli in eighth.

Marc Marquez completed the top nine.

Martin has now completed a perfect Saturday at Silverstone, taking pole position before converting it into a dominant Sprint victory.

The championship leader will now target a third consecutive British GP victory across the weekend, but Sunday brings a much longer challenge.

The 2026 Qatar Airways British Grand Prix will be contested over 20 laps at the iconic Silverstone Circuit, with the lights scheduled to go out at 13:00 local time (UTC+1).
