Marco Bezzecchi Takes Record-Breaking Qatar GP Pole as Marc Marquez Qualifies Second
Lusail, Qatar, November 8, 2026: Marco Bezzecchi secured pole position for the 2026 Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar with a new all-time lap record at the Lusail International Circuit. The Aprilia Racing rider clocked a stunning 1:50.028 to beat championship leader Marc Marquez by 0.266 seconds, while Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the front row in third. Jorge Martin, meanwhile, faces a challenging race weekend after qualifying 11th, potentially complicating Marquez’s bid to secure a championship match point on Sunday.
Bezzecchi produced a superb performance in Q2 to claim his second lap record of the session, underlining Aprilia’s strong pace under the floodlights in Qatar. The Italian had already emerged as a serious contender after Friday’s practice sessions and converted that speed into pole position with a decisive final effort.
Marquez will start second on the grid for Ducati Lenovo Team, knowing that the Tissot Sprint could prove crucial to his championship ambitions. The Spaniard needs to outscore Martin by five points in Saturday’s Sprint to secure a championship match point for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
However, Martin’s 11th-place qualifying result gives Marquez an opportunity to strengthen his position in the title battle, provided he can convert his front-row starting position into a strong Sprint result.
Bezzecchi breaks Lusail lap record to claim pole
The battle for pole position intensified in Q2, with Marquez initially setting the benchmark before Bezzecchi produced a remarkable lap to take control of the session.
The Aprilia rider first smashed the existing all-time lap record with a 1:50.065, moving ahead of Friday’s fastest rider, Di Giannantonio. Bezzecchi established a 0.296-second advantage over Marquez, while Raul Fernandez provisionally occupied third place.
With three minutes remaining, the riders returned to the circuit for their final attempts. Marquez looked capable of challenging for pole, gaining time through the opening two sectors before losing ground in the third.
The Ducati rider eventually crossed the line two tenths off Bezzecchi’s benchmark, leaving him provisionally second.
Bezzecchi, however, was not finished. The Italian improved further, taking another 0.037 seconds off his previous best to post a new lap record of 1:50.028 and extend his advantage over Marquez to 0.266 seconds.
Di Giannantonio secured third place to complete an all-Italian front row. The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider, who topped Friday’s timesheets and won the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, continued his impressive form at Lusail.
Martin struggles in qualifying as championship pressure builds
While Bezzecchi celebrated pole position, Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin endured a frustrating qualifying session, eventually settling for 11th on the grid.
The Spaniard had the outright speed to challenge for a better position but was unable to put together a clean final lap. Martin encountered Pedro Acosta in the final sector, disrupting his attempt to improve his time.
The Aprilia rider was visibly frustrated as he sat up and abandoned his effort, leaving him outside the top 10 and facing a difficult challenge in the Sprint.
Martin’s qualifying position could have significant implications for the championship battle. Marquez needs to outscore his principal title rival by five points in the Sprint to secure a match point for Sunday.
The 11th-place starting position leaves Martin with considerable work to do, although his pace suggests he cannot be discounted from the fight.
Bezzecchi also has championship ambitions of his own, despite trailing Marquez by 67 points heading into the Qatar weekend. The Italian needs a strong result across the Sprint and Grand Prix to keep his title hopes alive.
Di Giannantonio leads Ducati and VR46 challenge
Di Giannantonio continued his strong Qatar form by qualifying third, putting himself in an excellent position to challenge for another podium finish.
The Italian has enjoyed considerable success at Lusail, having won the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. His performance in qualifying also highlighted the competitiveness of the VR46 Ducati package, with the rider consistently among the quickest throughout the weekend.
Raul Fernandez secured fourth place for the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team but was unable to improve on his final attempt after a significant moment disrupted his lap.
Ducati Lenovo Team’s Francesco Bagnaia qualified fifth, ahead of Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura in sixth, completing the second row.
Johann Zarco took seventh for Castrol Honda LCR, followed by Acosta in eighth and Fermin Aldeguer in ninth. Both riders progressed through Q1, with Aldeguer emerging fastest in the opening qualifying segment.
Enea Bastianini completed the top 10 for Red Bull KTM Tech3, while Martin was 11th. Brad Binder rounded out the 12-rider Q2 field in 12th after crashing early in the session. The South African was reported to be okay following the incident.
Acosta and Aldeguer progress through Q1
Earlier, Q1 witnessed a competitive battle between Acosta and Aldeguer for the two available places in the second qualifying segment.
Acosta initially held a comfortable advantage as the riders headed out for their second runs. However, Aldeguer found additional pace and moved to the top of the timesheets with two minutes remaining.
Acosta responded during the final flying laps but could not dislodge the Gresini rider from first place. Both progressed to Q2, with Aldeguer taking the honours ahead of the KTM rider.
Their progress ultimately earned them eighth and ninth places on the final grid, respectively.
Qatar Sprint could decide Marquez’s championship opportunity
With Bezzecchi on pole, Marquez second and Martin starting 11th, the Qatar Sprint takes on added significance in the 2026 MotoGP championship battle.
Marquez needs to outscore Martin by five points in Saturday’s Sprint to secure a championship match point for Sunday. He also has a target of outscoring Bezzecchi by eight points over the weekend to put himself in a position to clinch the title.
For Bezzecchi, pole position provides an ideal opportunity to reduce the 67-point deficit and keep his championship ambitions alive.
Martin, meanwhile, faces a recovery mission from the fourth row after a qualifying session that failed to reflect his underlying pace.
With the Lusail circuit’s floodlights set to provide the backdrop, the Sprint promises an important chapter in the championship battle, with Marquez, Bezzecchi and Martin all having plenty at stake.
