MotoGP Australian GP: Marc Marquez Takes Phillip Island Pole by 1.494s Despite Crash
Phillip Island, Australia, October 24, 2026: Marc Marquez claimed pole position for the 2026 MotoGP Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island with a commanding lap of 1:34.203, overcoming a crash at Turn 4 to secure the top spot by a remarkable 1.494 seconds. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider mastered the tricky, damp conditions to produce one of the most dominant qualifying performances in recent MotoGP history.
BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider Alex Marquez secured second place, while Johann Zarco of Castrol Honda LCR completed the front row after progressing through Q1. Championship leader Jorge Martin qualified fourth for Aprilia Racing, narrowly missing out on a front-row start ahead of the Tissot Sprint.
Marc Marquez’s pole margin was reported as the largest since the 2019 Czech Grand Prix, when the Spaniard also topped qualifying despite a crash.
Marc Marquez recovers from crash to dominate Q2
Qualifying at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit took place in challenging conditions, with a damp track beginning to dry before rain returned during Q2. The changing grip levels made tyre choice and timing crucial as the riders fought for grid positions.
Marc Marquez had dominated FP2 but suffered a front-end crash at Miller Corner on his first flying lap in Q2. Unable to save the Ducati, the reigning World Champion returned to the pits and switched to his second bike as the weather conditions deteriorated.
Johann Zarco initially held provisional pole, with Alex Marquez also in contention. However, Marc Marquez soon began setting purple sectors, repeatedly improving his pace before taking the top position with a lap of 1:34.203.
Zarco subsequently posted a 1:35.706, while Jack Miller moved into provisional second place to the delight of the Australian crowd. Marc Marquez then delivered another improvement to extend his advantage to 1.494 seconds, leaving his rivals with little opportunity to respond.
Alex Marquez produced a late lap to move into second, completing a Marquez family front-row combination for Ducati machinery, with the younger brother riding for Gresini Racing.
Jorge Martin qualifies fourth as title battle intensifies
Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martin, who leads the MotoGP World Championship, faced pressure during the closing stages of qualifying. With around four minutes remaining, Martin was down in 10th place, while teammate Marco Bezzecchi occupied sixth.
Martin responded with an improved lap to climb to fourth. He had been on course to challenge for second place, but lost time in the final sector and missed out on the front row.
The fourth-place result gives Martin a position on the second row for the Sprint and Grand Prix, keeping him within reach of the leading contenders. However, Bezzecchi’s ninth-place qualifying result leaves the Italian with work to do as he attempts to reduce the 46-point deficit to his Aprilia teammate in the championship standings.
Jack Miller impresses in Phillip Island farewell
Home favourite Jack Miller delivered a strong qualifying performance for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP, securing fifth place on the grid in what was described as his MotoGP farewell at Phillip Island.
Miller was among the leading contenders in Q1, trading positions with Zarco, Francesco Bagnaia and Brad Binder before narrowly missing out on the top two places in Q2. His fifth-place finish puts him ahead of Raul Fernandez, who qualified sixth for the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team.
Pedro Acosta qualified seventh for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, followed by Fabio Di Giannantonio in eighth for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team. Bezzecchi completed the top nine, ahead of the fourth-row qualifiers.
Rookie Diogo Moreira qualified 10th for Pro Honda LCR, with Enea Bastianini 11th for Red Bull KTM Tech3 and Ai Ogura 12th for SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team.
MotoGP Australian GP: Qualifying sets up Sprint showdown
With Marc Marquez starting from pole position and holding a substantial advantage over the rest of the field in qualifying, attention now turns to the Tissot Sprint. The 15:00 local-time start is set to bring another test of rider adaptability, particularly if rain returns to Phillip Island.
Alex Marquez and Zarco will line up alongside Marc Marquez on the front row, while Martin starts fourth and Miller begins his home Sprint from fifth. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, will need to make progress from ninth if he is to challenge Martin in the championship battle.
The uncertain weather adds another variable to the Australian weekend, with the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix likely to demand careful tyre management and precise decisions as track conditions evolve.
