MotoGP Australian GP 2026: Jorge Martin Leads Marc Marquez by Two Points as Title Race Heats Up

Phillip Island, Australia, October 20, 2026: The 2026 MotoGP World Championship heads to Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix, with Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez separated by just two points as the title battle intensifies. The final Australian GP at the iconic circuit before MotoGP moves to Adelaide in 2027 promises to be a crucial round, with five Grands Prix scheduled across the next six weeks.

Phillip Island has hosted memorable MotoGP battles since first appearing on the calendar in 1989, becoming the home of the Australian Grand Prix in 1997. As the championship prepares to bid farewell to the circuit, the 2026 edition could play a decisive role in determining the title contenders’ momentum heading into the season finale.

Jorge Martin vs Marc Marquez: Two-Point Title Battle

Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martin heads into the Australian GP with a narrow two-point advantage over reigning world champion Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo Team. Marquez maintained the same deficit after the Indonesian GP, where Aprilia secured a dominant 1-2-3-4 finish, with Martin taking third place.

Martin has recorded just one Grand Prix victory this season but has finished on the Sunday podium at the last three rounds. Marquez, meanwhile, has six Grand Prix podium finishes in 2026, all of which have been victories, underlining his ability to convert opportunities into maximum points.

The pair delivered one of the most memorable races of the 2024 season at Phillip Island, with Marquez emerging victorious. With the championship now reaching its decisive phase, another close contest between the two rivals could have major implications for the title.

Marco Bezzecchi Back in the Title Hunt

Marco Bezzecchi has revived his championship challenge with a return to Grand Prix winning form in Indonesia. The Aprilia Racing rider has stood on the podium at each of the last three Grands Prix and has finished on the rostrum in five of the previous six rounds.

Bezzecchi is 46 points behind Martin with five rounds remaining, keeping him firmly in contention. He also has a 50-point advantage over Ai Ogura, strengthening his position in the battle among the championship’s leading contenders.

The Italian demonstrated impressive form during the latter stages of last season and won the Phillip Island Sprint in 2025. A similar performance this weekend could help him close the gap to Martin and Marquez as the championship enters its final stretch.

Ai Ogura, Pedro Acosta and Raul Fernandez Lead the Chasing Pack

Ai Ogura occupies fourth place in the championship standings, holding a one-point advantage over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta. The Austrian GP winner will be looking to recover from a difficult run in Japan and Indonesia.

Fabio Di Giannantonio remains close behind, while Trackhouse Racing’s Raul Fernandez heads to Australia after finishing second at Mandalika. Fernandez secured his maiden MotoGP victory at Phillip Island in 2025, with Di Giannantonio finishing second, making both riders ones to watch this weekend.

Alex Marquez, Fermin Aldeguer and Francesco Bagnaia complete the top ten in the standings. Aldeguer, however, remains sidelined by a hand injury sustained in Lombok, with Iker Lecuona stepping in as his replacement.

Jack Miller Targets Strong Final Australian GP at Phillip Island

The battle outside the top ten remains competitive, with Enea Bastianini, Luca Marini and Brad Binder separated by relatively small points margins. Marini will aim to maintain his record of scoring points at every Grand Prix in 2026, while Binder arrives after three consecutive top-eight finishes at the Australian GP.

Fabio Quartararo has also scored points in the last two Grands Prix and Sprints. Rookie Diogo Moreira is level on points with Quartararo, while Franco Morbidelli and Johann Zarco remain within reach.

Home favourite Jack Miller will be among the biggest attractions at Phillip Island as he prepares for his final Australian Grand Prix before MotoGP’s move to Adelaide in 2027. Miller came close to a Sprint podium at the circuit last year and will be eager to deliver another strong performance in front of his home crowd.

Miller’s teammate Toprak Razgatlioglu returns to a circuit familiar from his WorldSBK career, while Alex Rins and Maverick Viñales will also be looking to improve their results. Joan Mir’s participation remains subject to confirmation as he continues to deal with illness.

Phillip Island Set for a Crucial MotoGP Weekend

With Martin leading Marquez by just two points, Bezzecchi rediscovering his winning form and several riders fighting for positions in the standings, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix arrives at a pivotal moment in the championship.

Five Grands Prix in six weeks will decide the destination of the MotoGP world title. Before the championship moves to Adelaide, Phillip Island has one final opportunity to deliver the close racing and dramatic finishes that have made it a favourite among riders and fans.
