Pedro Acosta Claims Stunning Barcelona MotoGP Pole as Marco Bezzecchi Crashes in Dramatic Qualifying
Catalonia, Barcelona, May 16, 2026: Pedro Acosta delivered a sensational performance to secure pole position for the Barcelona MotoGP weekend, capping off a dominant showing for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ahead of the Tissot Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. The young Spaniard stormed to his first pole position since the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, setting the stage for a thrilling battle at the front.
Joining Acosta on the front row are Franco Morbidelli of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team and Alex Marquez representing BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP. Meanwhile, championship leader Marco Bezzecchi suffered a costly crash at Turn 2 during Q2 and will start only 12th on the grid.
Franco Morbidelli and Jorge Martin Advance Through Intense Q1
Qualifying 1 produced immediate drama as a stacked field fought for the final two Q2 spots. Early pace-setters Morbidelli and Enea Bastianini initially occupied the transfer positions, while Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura struggled to improve.
Martin briefly jumped to the top of the timesheets during his second run but crashed moments later at Turn 5. Despite the incident, the reigning world champion still progressed into Q2. Morbidelli then responded with a late flying lap to secure the fastest Q1 time.
Bagnaia, however, failed to advance and was left 13th overall on the starting grid in another disappointing qualifying session for the Ducati Lenovo Team star.
Pedro Acosta Dominates Q2 as KTM Ends Pole Drought
The decisive Q2 session saw KTM’s strong Barcelona pace continue. Acosta immediately established himself as the rider to beat with a blistering 1:38.118 lap, ahead of Alex Marquez and Raul Fernandez from Trackhouse MotoGP Team.
As the final laps unfolded, disaster struck for Bezzecchi, who crashed heavily at Turn 2 and was unable to improve his time. The incident left the Aprilia rider stranded down in 12th position — his worst qualifying result since Sepang last season.
Behind the chaos, Fabio Quartararo surged into the top five for Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, while Morbidelli delivered a superb lap to climb to provisional second.
Acosta then improved once more to seal pole position, giving KTM its first MotoGP pole since Pol Espargaro topped qualifying at the 2020 European Grand Prix. Morbidelli secured his first front-row start since Sepang last year, while Alex Marquez completed the front row in third.
Raul Fernandez, Johann Zarco Shine in Barcelona MotoGP Qualifying
Fernandez impressed with fourth place — his best qualifying result since Buriram — while Johann Zarco continued Honda’s resurgence by taking fifth for Castrol Honda LCR.
Fabio Di Giannantonio qualified sixth as the leading Ducati rider, ahead of Quartararo in seventh. Brad Binder secured eighth, marking his first top-10 grid position since Sachsenring 2025.
Martin ultimately finished ninth but managed to outqualify teammate Bezzecchi for the first time since joining Aprilia Racing. Joan Mir rounded out the top ten for Honda HRC Castrol.
With Acosta, Morbidelli and Alex Marquez leading the charge, Barcelona is perfectly poised for an explosive MotoGP Sprint and Grand Prix showdown.
