Johann Zarco Tops Friday Practice at 2026 French MotoGP as Marc Marquez Faces Q1 Battle

Le Mans, France, May 08, 2026: French fans at the legendary Le Mans Circuit were treated to a dream start to the 2026 French Grand Prix weekend as Johann Zarco stormed to the top of the timesheets during Friday Practice at the French MotoGP.

Riding for LCR Honda Castrol, Zarco continued his sensational home form by clocking the fastest lap in dry conditions, edging out Fabio Di Giannantonio of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team by just 0.010 seconds. Double MotoGP World Champion Francesco Bagnaia completed the top three despite suffering a late crash during his final flying lap.

Early Crashes Shake Up Friday Session

The Practice session witnessed multiple incidents early on, beginning with reigning 2024 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Martin crashing at Turn 9 just minutes into the session for Aprilia Racing.

Rookie sensation Fermin Aldeguer also went down at Turn 3 after losing the front of his bike, while Raul Fernandez suffered a dramatic mechanical issue as his Trackhouse Aprilia caught fire, briefly halting the session.

Zarco Delivers for Home Crowd at Le Mans

As conditions stabilized, Di Giannantonio initially looked strongest after a rapid start to the afternoon session. However, Zarco responded in style, delivering consecutive fastest laps in the closing stages to electrify the packed French grandstands.

The intensity ramped up in the final 15 minutes as several riders pushed for direct qualification into Q2. Pedro Acosta crashed at the penultimate corner while chasing a top-ten position but recovered quickly to return to the pits.

Former MotoGP World Champion Joan Mir briefly moved to the top before Bagnaia fired in a stunning 1:30.045 lap to seize provisional P1. However, the Italian later crashed during his final attempt.

Late improvements from Alex Rins, Martin, Marco Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez and rookie Ai Ogura reshuffled the standings dramatically.

Marc Marquez Forced into Q1

One of the biggest surprises of the day came as six-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez failed to improve late in the session, finishing 13th and missing direct qualification to Q2 for the first time since the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix weekend.

French star Fabio Quartararo also endured a difficult Friday, ending the session down in 17th place despite briefly running inside the top ten.
