Ott Tänak to Step Back from Full-Time WRC After 2025 Season — Hyundai Motorsport Celebrates a Legendary Partnership
Estonian star bows out after 8 victories, 28 podiums, and a 2020 manufacturers’ title with Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team
Alzenau, Germany, November 10, 2025: In a major announcement that marks the end of an iconic era in rallying, Ott Tänak has confirmed that he will step down from full-time competition at the end of the 2025 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) season. His decision concludes one of the most successful and memorable partnerships in the sport — a collaboration with Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team that has produced eight victories, 28 podiums, and the 2020 WRC manufacturers’ title.
A Partnership Defined by Passion and Performance
Tänak, alongside his long-time co-driver Martin Järveoja, first joined Hyundai Motorsport in 2020, and their impact was immediate. Their first victory came at Rally Estonia, the duo’s home event, where they delivered an emotional 1-2 finish for the team. The following season, they triumphed again at Arctic Rally Finland, mastering the challenging snow-covered stages to claim another memorable win.
After parting ways at the end of 2022, Tänak returned to Hyundai in 2024, once again proving his class by winning Rally Italia Sardegna and the Central European Rally, results that helped secure a third-place finish in the Drivers’ Championship.
While 2025 has presented challenges for Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team, with the i20 N Rally1 struggling for consistency, Tänak still showcased his trademark grit — taking six podiums and a win at the Acropolis Rally so far this season.
An Icon of Estonian Motorsport
Throughout his WRC journey, Tänak has carried the Estonian flag proudly at rallies around the globe. Known for his raw pace, precision, and relentless competitiveness, he has earned a reputation as one of rallying’s most respected and admired drivers. His announcement marks not a farewell, but a pause to focus on family, business, and life beyond full-time rallying.
Ott Tänak said:
“After many incredible years competing at the top of the WRC, I have decided that the end of the 2025 season is the right moment to step back from full-time rallying. This isn’t a complete goodbye — it’s a chance to reset, recharge, and refocus.
I want to sincerely thank everyone at Hyundai Motorsport for the incredible years we’ve spent together — from the engineers and mechanics to the management and all the fans who have supported us. We’ve shared victories, challenges, and countless memories that I’ll always carry with me. I still love this sport deeply, and I’m sure I’ll continue to be around in some way.”
Hyundai Motorsport Pays Tribute
Cyril Abiteboul, President of Hyundai Motorsport, praised Tänak’s contribution and professionalism over the years:
“While we were sad to learn of Ott’s decision, we naturally understand his motivation to step away from full-time rallying. We have achieved a lot together — from that first electrifying win in Estonia to the 2020 manufacturers’ title, as well as eight victories and many podiums.
Ott has always been a true competitor — one of the finest rally drivers in the world. Even through the challenges, his dedication never wavered. He remains a part of the Hyundai family, and we thank him for everything he’s done for our team.”
Looking Ahead: Hyundai’s 2026 WRC Line-Up
With Tänak’s departure marking the end of an era, Hyundai Motorsport will announce its full 2026 WRC driver line-up in due course. The team remains committed to continuing its pursuit of rally excellence and building upon the legacy that drivers like Ott Tänak have helped establish.
A Legacy That Transcends the Stages
Tänak’s journey with Hyundai will be remembered for its thrilling victories, resilience under pressure, and enduring sportsmanship. His decision to step back underscores the balance between professional passion and personal priorities — a fitting chapter for one of rallying’s modern greats.
As the curtain begins to close on his full-time WRC career, fans and teammates alike will celebrate a driver who brought intensity, humility, and heart to every rally.
