Marc Marquez Wins Phillip Island MotoGP Sprint as Jorge Martin Crashes, Surrenders Championship Lead
Phillip Island, Australia, October 25, 2026: Marc Marquez claimed victory in a dramatic MotoGP Tissot Sprint at Phillip Island, defeating brother Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio to lead a Ducati podium sweep at the Australian Grand Prix. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider secured his ninth Sprint victory of the 2025 season after championship rival Jorge Martin crashed out on Lap 8, dramatically changing the title battle.
Martin, who entered Saturday leading the championship, lost control of his Aprilia at Turn 8 while battling Marc Marquez for the lead. The crash ended his Sprint and resulted in a weekend-ending injury, leaving the 2024 MotoGP World Champion unable to contest Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Marc Marquez’s victory propelled him back into the championship lead, while Alex Marquez finished second for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP. Di Giannantonio completed the podium in third for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, securing a clean sweep for Ducati machinery.
Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin Deliver an Intense Opening Battle
Marc Marquez made a perfect start from pole position to take the holeshot, but Martin immediately charged through from the second row to claim second place. The opening lap was action-packed, with the leading riders fighting hard for track position.
Alex Marquez joined the battle on Lap 2, overtaking Martin at Turn 10. However, the Aprilia rider responded immediately with an aggressive move at Turn 1 to reclaim second place and continue his pursuit of Marc Marquez.
Martin subsequently launched an attack at Turn 4 on Lap 3 but ran wide, allowing Marc to maintain the advantage. The championship leader tried again at Turn 10 and this time completed the move to take the lead.
Johann Zarco initially remained in contention in fourth place, but a technical problem brought the Castrol Honda LCR rider’s Sprint to an early end.
The battle at the front intensified as Marc and Martin repeatedly exchanged positions. Martin made a mistake at Turn 4 on Lap 5, allowing Marc to move ahead, before reclaiming the position at Turn 1 on Lap 6. However, he could not hold the line through Turn 2, enabling Marc to regain the advantage.
The same pattern continued on Lap 8, with Martin attempting another block pass at Turn 4. The move failed to deliver a lasting advantage, leaving the Aprilia rider pushing hard to stay with his rival.
Jorge Martin Crashes at Turn 8
Martin’s aggressive approach eventually proved costly. After running over the inside kerb at Turn 7, the Spaniard was unsettled approaching Turn 8 and lost the front of his Aprilia, sliding into the gravel.
Despite attempting to save the crash, Martin was unable to keep the bike upright. His retirement handed Marc Marquez a clear path to victory and elevated Alex Marquez to second, with Di Giannantonio moving into the final podium position.
The crash had major championship implications, with Marc reclaiming the lead as Martin’s Australian Grand Prix weekend came to an end because of his injury.
Bezzecchi Charges Through the Field as Ducati Secures Podium Sweep
While the battle for victory dominated the headlines, Marco Bezzecchi produced an impressive recovery ride for Aprilia Racing.
The Italian dropped from ninth on the grid to 12th at the end of the opening lap but steadily worked his way through the field. He reached fifth before overtaking Pedro Acosta for fourth at Turn 1 with four laps remaining.
Bezzecchi eventually finished fourth ahead of Acosta, who secured fifth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.
Ai Ogura initially crossed the line in sixth for Trackhouse MotoGP, but a post-race tyre-pressure penalty changed the final classification. The Japanese rider received an eight-second penalty, promoting Brad Binder to sixth, Jack Miller to seventh, Diogo Moreira to eighth and Iker Lecuona to ninth.
Binder represented Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, while Miller scored points for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP. Moreira finished as the highest-placed Pro Honda LCR rider, with Lecuona claiming the final point-scoring position for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP.

Raul Fernandez Also Ruled Out of Sunday’s Grand Prix
The Phillip Island Sprint also brought disappointing news for Raul Fernandez, who won the 2025 Australian Grand Prix. The Trackhouse MotoGP rider was forced to retire from the Sprint and subsequently ruled out of Sunday’s race.
Fernandez continues to suffer from the effects of a fractured right index finger sustained at the Indonesian Grand Prix, preventing him from competing in the remainder of the Australian Grand Prix weekend.
With Martin and Fernandez both unavailable for Sunday’s race, the final MotoGP event at Phillip Island promises further uncertainty, particularly with changeable weather forecast for the island circuit.
Marc Marquez will head into the Grand Prix with renewed momentum and the championship lead, while Alex Marquez and Di Giannantonio will look to build on their Sprint podium finishes. After an intense Saturday that transformed the title picture, attention now turns to Sunday’s race and the final chapter of MotoGP competition at Phillip Island before the championship moves to its next destination.
