Lewis Hamilton Secures Maiden Ferrari Victory at Spanish Grand Prix as Strategic Masterclass Ends Mercedes’ Perfect Start
Barcelona, Spain, June 15, 2026: Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory as a Ferrari driver in spectacular fashion at the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, using a perfectly executed three-stop strategy to defeat Mercedes’ George Russell and McLaren’s Lando Norris and hand Ferrari its first Formula 1 victory since the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.
The seven-time World Champion crossed the finish line 19.561 seconds clear of Russell after 66 laps around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, securing the 106th victory of his illustrious Formula 1 career and his first since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.
Starting alongside pole-sitter George Russell on the front row, Hamilton initially lost ground as Mercedes’ medium-tyre strategy allowed Russell to control the opening phase of the race. Ferrari, however, had a different plan.
While Russell established an early lead, Ferrari committed Hamilton to an aggressive three-stop strategy that gradually swung the race in the Briton’s favour. The pivotal moment came on Lap 28 when Ferrari brought Hamilton in for medium tyres, dropping him into traffic but giving him a significant pace advantage over his rivals.
Hamilton quickly sliced through the field, while Mercedes found itself managing an increasingly intense battle between Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli. The intra-team fight allowed Hamilton to close the gap as Ferrari’s strategy unfolded perfectly.
The race-winning move came after Fernando Alonso retired his Aston Martin at Turn 9, triggering a Virtual Safety Car period. Ferrari reacted instantly, bringing Hamilton in for a final stop for hard tyres. The timing proved perfect, allowing Hamilton to rejoin just ahead of Russell as racing resumed.
From that point onward, Hamilton was untouchable. Managing his tyres and pace expertly, the Ferrari driver steadily pulled away to seal a landmark victory that ended Mercedes’ unbeaten run in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Mercedes looked set to salvage a one-two finish when Antonelli overtook Russell in the closing stages. However, heartbreak struck for the championship leader when a technical problem forced the Italian rookie to retire just a handful of laps from the finish while running in second place.
Russell inherited second place, while reigning World Champion Lando Norris secured the final podium position for McLaren.
Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull after losing valuable time during a slow pit stop, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri completed the top five. Isack Hadjar continued his impressive rookie campaign by taking sixth place for Red Bull.
Ferrari’s hopes of a double points finish evaporated late in the race when Charles Leclerc retired after reporting a power steering failure following an excursion through the gravel. Alpine enjoyed one of its strongest weekends of the season with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto finishing seventh and eighth respectively, while Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the points-paying positions.
The result marks a significant turning point in the 2026 Formula 1 season, reigniting Ferrari’s championship ambitions while demonstrating that Mercedes can be beaten despite its dominant start to the campaign.
