Marc Marquez Wins Dramatic Qatar MotoGP Sprint as Jorge Martin Stages Incredible Recovery to Finish Third

Lusail, Qatar, November 8, 2026: Marc Marquez moved within touching distance of an eighth MotoGP World Championship after winning a dramatic Tissot Sprint at the 2026 Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider collected 12 points to secure a championship match point for Sunday’s Grand Prix, while Fabio Di Giannantonio snatched second place with a last-lap overtake on an injured Jorge Martin. The Aprilia rider produced an extraordinary recovery from 11th on the grid to finish third, despite racing just two weeks after fracturing his right wrist in Australia.

The 10-lap Sprint at the Lusail International Circuit delivered multiple incidents, a red flag, a controversial collision between Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi, and a remarkable comeback from Martin.

Bezzecchi, who started from pole position after setting a new lap record in qualifying, crashed out following contact with Marquez, dealing a potentially decisive blow to his 2026 championship ambitions.

Marquez’s victory, meanwhile, extended his record to 25 Sprint wins and left him 49 points ahead of Martin in the championship standings. Bezzecchi is now 79 points behind the Ducati rider.

The result sets up a potentially title-deciding Qatar Grand Prix, with Marquez needing to win Sunday’s race while Martin fails to score to secure his eighth premier-class world title.

Bagnaia crashes out as first Sprint start ends in red flag

The opening start saw polesitter Bezzecchi make an excellent getaway, narrowly holding off Marquez’s challenge. Francesco Bagnaia briefly moved ahead of his Ducati Lenovo teammate at Turn 2, but Marquez responded with a cutback on the exit to reclaim second place.

Further down the field, Martin initially struggled to make progress from his 11th-place starting position.

The first major incident unfolded at the final corner on Lap 1 when Fermin Aldeguer attempted to pass Pedro Acosta. The Gresini rider misjudged his braking at Turn 16 and collected Bagnaia, sending the Italian crashing out of the race.

The incident prompted race officials to red-flag the Sprint as medical personnel attended to Bagnaia in the gravel trap.

Ducati subsequently confirmed that the two-time MotoGP World Champion had sustained fractures to the fourth and fifth metatarsals in his right foot. Bagnaia was conscious and talking before being taken to the medical centre and subsequently transferred to Doha Hospital for further examinations.

Aldeguer was handed a double Long Lap penalty for the restarted Sprint.

Marquez takes control after restart as Bezzecchi crashes out

Following a brief interruption, the Sprint restarted over 10 laps, with Marquez getting the better launch this time to take the holeshot ahead of Bezzecchi and Di Giannantonio.

Martin also made significant progress, climbing to sixth on the opening lap before overtaking Raul Fernandez to move into fifth.

The Spaniard continued his charge and soon found himself in fourth place, setting up a potential challenge for the podium despite his recent wrist injury.

At the front, Bezzecchi attempted to pass Marquez at Turn 15 on Lap 2, but the Ducati rider defended his position effectively.

The biggest incident of the restarted race followed soon afterwards.

Bezzecchi spotted a gap as Marquez ran slightly wide, attempting to take advantage. However, Marquez returned to the racing line to defend his position, and the two riders made contact.

The collision sent Bezzecchi crashing out of the Sprint, ending his hopes of scoring valuable championship points in Qatar.

The Stewards investigated the incident but decided that no further action was necessary, classifying it as a racing incident.

For Bezzecchi, the retirement was another significant setback in his pursuit of the 2026 MotoGP title. Although he remains mathematically in contention, his deficit to Marquez has increased to 79 points.

Injured Martin delivers remarkable comeback from P11

With Bezzecchi out, Martin emerged as the biggest challenger to Marquez, producing an extraordinary performance despite his physical condition.

The 2024 MotoGP World Champion had fractured his right wrist just two weeks earlier at the Australian Grand Prix, making his recovery from 11th on the grid particularly impressive.

Martin initially moved into fifth before progressing to fourth and launching an attack on Marquez.

The Aprilia rider attempted to pass the championship leader, but Marquez successfully defended his position and gradually increased his advantage.

With three laps remaining, Marquez had established a lead of approximately 0.8 seconds, while Martin was increasingly under pressure from Di Giannantonio.

The Italian remained close to the Aprilia rider and eventually made his move on the final lap at Turn 2.

Di Giannantonio’s decisive overtake secured second place, pushing Martin down to third and giving the VR46 rider a valuable Sprint podium.

Despite missing out on second, Martin’s recovery from 11th to third was one of the standout performances of the weekend.

Marquez moves within reach of eighth MotoGP title

Marquez’s Sprint victory has put him in a position to potentially clinch the 2026 MotoGP World Championship at Lusail.

The Spaniard now leads Martin by 49 points, with Bezzecchi a further 30 points behind the Aprilia rider.

The title scenario is straightforward: if Marquez wins Sunday’s Grand Prix and Martin fails to score, the Ducati rider will secure his eighth premier-class world championship.

A championship victory would further strengthen Marquez’s remarkable record, having already established himself as one of MotoGP’s most successful riders.

However, Martin’s impressive Sprint performance suggests that Aprilia will not give up without a fight. The Spaniard has demonstrated that he can remain competitive despite his injury, and his recovery could yet force the championship battle to continue into the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Bezzecchi, meanwhile, will need an exceptional Sunday performance to revive his increasingly slim title hopes.

Di Giannantonio leads the chasing pack as Fernandez finishes fourth

Behind the podium finishers, Raul Fernandez secured fourth place for the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team, continuing his strong form in Qatar.

Johann Zarco delivered an impressive performance to finish fifth for Castrol Honda LCR, while Acosta edged out Trackhouse teammate Ai Ogura to claim sixth.

Ogura settled for seventh, followed by Enea Bastianini in eighth for Red Bull KTM Tech3.

The final championship point went to Iker Lecuona, who was standing in for Alex Marquez at BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP. The 2026 WorldSBK runner-up delivered a commendable performance to finish ninth.

Qatar GP sets up potential championship showdown

The Qatar Sprint has dramatically reshaped the 2026 MotoGP championship picture.

Marquez heads into Sunday’s Grand Prix with a 49-point advantage over Martin and a potential opportunity to seal his eighth premier-class crown.

Martin has emerged as his principal challenger after an extraordinary recovery, while Bezzecchi faces an uphill battle following his Sprint retirement.

With the Lusail International Circuit set to host the main event under the floodlights, all eyes will be on Marquez and Martin as the championship battle approaches its climax.
