Antonelli Triumphs in Miami GP 2026, Beats Norris for Third Straight F1 Victory
Miami, USA, May 4, 2026: Kimi Antonelli continued his sensational rise in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship, securing a composed victory at the Miami Grand Prix after holding off relentless pressure from reigning World Champion Lando Norris.
The Mercedes driver converted pole position into his third consecutive win, further strengthening his early-season title bid. Norris finished second for McLaren, while teammate Oscar Piastri capitalised on late drama to complete the podium.
Race Drama Unfolds at Miami International Autodrome
The race at the Miami International Autodrome was brought forward by three hours to avoid looming thunderstorms—but the action started immediately.
Antonelli made a sluggish getaway, allowing Charles Leclerc to snatch the lead into Turn 1. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen spun on corner exit, dropping down the order.
Further chaos followed when:
- Pierre Gasly flipped after contact with Liam Lawson (both drivers escaped serious injury)
- Isack Hadjar crashed heavily at the chicane
The incidents triggered an early Safety Car, reshuffling strategies across the grid.
Antonelli vs Norris: A Tactical Duel
After multiple lead changes in the opening laps, Norris briefly took control following the restart. However, Antonelli regained track position through strategy and maintained composure under intense pressure.
Despite showing superior pace at times, Norris struggled to overtake in dirty air—a recurring theme on the Miami circuit. Antonelli also managed minor gearbox downshift issues but delivered a flawless defensive drive.
The victory extends his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 24 points.
Late-Race Twist Costs Leclerc Podium
In the closing stages, tyre degradation hit Verstappen hard, allowing Leclerc, Piastri, and Russell to close in.
Leclerc overtook Verstappen and looked set for third—until a last-lap spin into the wall dropped him down the order. Piastri seized the opportunity to claim P3, finishing 27 seconds behind Antonelli.
