2026 MotoGP Malaysian GP: Marc Marquez Leads Title Race as Jorge Martin Battles Injury

Sepang, Malaysia, October 28, 2026: The 2026 MotoGP World Championship heads to the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit following the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix race due to weather-related visibility concerns. With the championship battle entering its decisive phase, Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi face contrasting challenges at Round 19 of the season.

Ducati Lenovo Team rider Marc Marquez leads the standings by 10 points over Aprilia Racing’s Martin, while Bezzecchi trails the championship leader by 50 points. With only three rounds remaining after the Malaysian Grand Prix, every point could prove crucial in determining the destination of the 2026 MotoGP title.

The cancellation of Sunday’s Australian GP meant that the championship picture remained unchanged after a dramatic Sprint at Phillip Island, where Martin crashed and sustained a non-displaced wrist fracture.

Jorge Martin’s Fitness in Focus at Sepang

Martin’s participation in the Malaysian Grand Prix remains a major talking point following his crash in the Australian GP Sprint. The 2024 MotoGP World Champion has suffered a non-displaced wrist fracture but, according to Aprilia Racing, has not returned to Spain for treatment and will not undergo surgery.

The Spaniard will need to pass a medical assessment on Thursday before being cleared to race. If fit, Martin will face the challenge of limiting his points loss while managing the injury at one of the most physically demanding circuits on the calendar.

For Marquez, Martin’s uncertain fitness presents an opportunity to extend his championship advantage. However, Sepang has not always been a comfortable venue for the Ducati rider. His last appearance at the circuit in 2024 resulted in a second-place finish in the Sprint before a crash contributed to a 12th-place finish in the Grand Prix.

Marquez has won twice at Sepang in the premier class, in 2014 and 2018. With a 10-point lead, the Spaniard will be keen to make the most of his position and avoid surrendering valuable ground in the title fight.

Bezzecchi, meanwhile, faces a different challenge. The Aprilia rider has never finished on the podium at Sepang in any class and was 11th in last year’s Malaysian Grand Prix, more than 19 seconds behind winner Alex Marquez.

However, both Bezzecchi and Aprilia have made significant progress this season, making last year’s result a limited indication of what to expect. The Italian needs a strong weekend to begin reducing his 50-point deficit and remain in contention for the championship.

Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta Among Riders to Watch

Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta are among the leading contenders to challenge for victory at Sepang, having finished first and second respectively at last year’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider Alex Marquez has an impressive record at the circuit, including a Sprint victory and second place in the Grand Prix in 2023, followed by two fourth-place finishes in 2024. The Spaniard also clinched the Moto2 world title at Sepang in 2019.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta is another rider to watch. The KTM star finished second last year and was the only rider to finish within eight seconds of Alex Marquez. With no direct involvement in the championship battle among the leading trio, Acosta could focus entirely on fighting for victory and potentially securing his second MotoGP Grand Prix win.

Aprilia and Ducati Teammates Could Influence Title Fight

Aprilia will be hoping that Raul Fernandez can return to action after withdrawing from the Australian Grand Prix with fractured fingers. Like Martin, the Trackhouse MotoGP rider must pass a medical assessment before being cleared to race.

Trackhouse teammate Ai Ogura will also be looking to build on his recent progress. The Japanese rider finished 10th at Sepang last year and will aim to collect valuable points as the battle between Aprilia and Ducati intensifies.

Fabio Di Giannantonio arrives after securing third place in the Australian Sprint, marking his 10th podium across Sprint and Grand Prix races this season. Teammate Franco Morbidelli also finished inside the top six at Sepang last year, giving the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team reasons to be optimistic.

Ducati Lenovo Team’s Francesco Bagnaia will be another rider in focus. The Italian has won the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2022 and 2024 and also secured pole position and Sprint victory at Sepang last year. A return to competitive form would provide Ducati with another strong contender at a crucial stage of the championship.

Fermin Aldeguer remains sidelined with a fracture in his right hand. WorldSBK runner-up Iker Lecuona will again replace the Spaniard at BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP after stepping in at Phillip Island.

Honda Targets Strong Sepang Showing

Honda HRC Castrol will be hoping Joan Mir and Luca Marini can return to action after both riders’ fitness concerns. Mir has particularly positive memories of Sepang, where he secured his most recent MotoGP podium with third place last season. Marini finished eighth, highlighting Honda’s encouraging performance at the circuit in 2025.

Johann Zarco of Castrol Honda LCR could also be a contender if wet conditions influence the weekend. The Frenchman demonstrated his ability in challenging weather at Phillip Island and will look to capitalise if rain affects the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Diogo Moreira of Pro Honda LCR will aim to challenge for top-10 finishes as he continues to gain experience in the premier class.

KTM and Yamaha Look to Build Momentum

Enea Bastianini will be looking to challenge for the podium with Red Bull KTM Tech3. The Italian won at Sepang in 2023 and finished on the podium in 2024, making the circuit a promising venue for a strong result.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Brad Binder also arrives in encouraging form, having recorded 12 consecutive Sunday points finishes. After finishing sixth in the Australian Sprint, the South African will aim to continue that consistency and potentially achieve a season-best result.

Teammate Maverick Viñales will continue his recovery from injury, targeting his first Sunday top-10 finish of the season as his strength and track mileage improve.

For Yamaha, Jack Miller will be eager to make up for the missed opportunity to race in front of his home crowd at Phillip Island. Fabio Quartararo was Yamaha’s leading finisher at Sepang last year with fifth place, while Miller and Alex Rins also scored points.

Augusto Fernandez, standing in for injured Toprak Razgatlioglu at Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP, will provide further input as Yamaha continues developing its V4 project.

Malaysian GP Could Prove Crucial in MotoGP Title Battle

The PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia arrives at a decisive point in the 2026 MotoGP season. Marquez has the advantage, Martin faces a race against time to prove his fitness, and Bezzecchi needs a major result to keep his championship hopes alive.

Sepang’s combination of long straights, heavy braking zones and technical corners is expected to test riders and machinery, while the possibility of rain could add another layer of uncertainty.

With the championship reaching its final three rounds after Malaysia, the weekend could significantly influence the title race. Whether Marquez extends his lead, Bezzecchi mounts a comeback or Martin returns to limit the damage, the Malaysian Grand Prix promises another pivotal chapter in the 2026 MotoGP World Championship.
