The European leg of the MotoGP season is over and the championship now heads into an intense run of five Grands Prix in six weeks across Asia and Oceania. Martin, riding for Aprilia Racing, arrives at Motegi with a narrow advantage over Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo Team, while just 42 points separate the top three riders in the championship.

Marco Bezzecchi, Martin’s Aprilia Racing teammate, occupies third place and remains firmly in contention, while Pedro Acosta has emerged as another potential threat after a strong run of results.

Martin Takes Championship Lead Into Japan

Martin arrives in Japan in a very different position from his previous visit to Motegi.

The 2023 Japanese Grand Prix winner strengthened his championship challenge at the most recent round in Austria, taking victory in the Sprint before finishing second in Sunday’s Grand Prix. Those results helped him establish a 12-point advantage over Marc Marquez.

Last year, however, Martin endured a difficult Japanese weekend, crashing into teammate Bezzecchi during the Sprint and suffering a collarbone fracture.

Bezzecchi and Acosta Remain in Title Contention

Marco Bezzecchi remains third in the championship, 42 points behind Martin.

The Aprilia rider was one of the strongest performers during the flyaway races last season, scoring the second-highest number of points from Motegi onwards. His performance during the final six weeks of the 2026 campaign could therefore prove crucial to his title aspirations.

Pedro Acosta is another rider to watch closely.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider has recorded five consecutive top-five finishes, including three successive podiums and his maiden MotoGP victory. He enters the Asian and Oceania leg 72 points behind Martin, but his recent form gives him reason to believe he can remain involved in the championship battle.

Acosta also performed strongly during the corresponding phase of last season, finishing as the third-highest points scorer from the Japanese Grand Prix onwards. Motegi is also a special venue for the Spaniard, who came close to his first MotoGP victory there during his rookie season.

Ai Ogura Returns Home in Strong Form

Ai Ogura arrives at his home Japanese Grand Prix with momentum after securing two fourth-place finishes in Austria.

The Trackhouse MotoGP rider was unable to compete in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix last year and will be hoping for a much stronger home event this time around.

Fabio Di Giannantonio is another rider looking to make an impact during the final stretch of the season. The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider is only four points behind Acosta but has failed to finish inside the top five in the last four Grands Prix.

Bagnaia Among Riders to Watch at Motegi

Francesco Bagnaia remains one of the major names to watch in Japan despite his position in the championship.

The Ducati Lenovo Team rider is currently ninth overall and is a two-time MotoGP World Champion. He is also a double winner at Motegi, having taken both victories in the 2025 Japanese GP weekend.

Bagnaia has played down expectations of repeating that performance in 2026, but his record at the circuit makes him a potential factor during the weekend.

Raul Fernandez and Alex Marquez are also returning to a circuit where they finished inside the top 10 last year, while Fermin Aldeguer will be looking to rediscover his form as the championship enters its most demanding phase.

Honda and Yamaha Prepare for Home MotoGP

The Japanese Grand Prix will be particularly significant for Honda and Yamaha as both manufacturers compete at their home round.

Luca Marini is Honda’s leading rider heading into Motegi, while Diogo Moreira will be targeting a return to the top 10 after a difficult recent run.

Johann Zarco will also be looking to continue his strong form after targeting a second consecutive double top-10 weekend.

Takaaki Nakagami will add further Japanese interest as he makes a wildcard appearance.

Binder, Morbidelli and Bastianini Among Riders to Watch

Brad Binder heads into the Asian leg after finishing sixth at the Red Bull Ring and will be looking to build on that result with a strong run of performances.

Franco Morbidelli will be aiming to reproduce his 2025 Motegi form, when he secured two top-five finishes.

Enea Bastianini is another rider with a strong recent record at the circuit, having finished on the podium in the Motegi Sprint in 2024.

There is also uncertainty surrounding Maverick Viñales after his tentative return during the Austria tyre test. Whether he is fit to race at Motegi will become clearer ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

With Martin leading Marquez by just 12 points, Bezzecchi only 42 points behind the championship leader and Acosta continuing to close in with strong form, the 2026 MotoGP title fight enters its decisive stage in Japan.
