George Russell Claims Stunning Austrian GP Pole as Verstappen Crashes in Dramatic F1 Qualifying

Red Bull Ring, Austria, June 27, 2026: George Russell secured a sensational pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring, edging Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.236 seconds while Max Verstappen’s bid for pole ended in a heavy crash during the final moments of Q3.

The Mercedes driver delivered a superb lap of 1:06.113 on his final flying run to snatch pole position after surviving a tense conclusion to qualifying, where Verstappen crashed at Turn 9 while appearing capable of challenging for the fastest time.

Race Control later confirmed Russell had completed his pole-winning lap under single yellow flags, allowing the Briton’s impressive effort to stand.

Russell Delivers Under Pressure

Ferrari looked poised to lock out the front row after both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton produced strong final laps in Q3. Leclerc briefly held provisional pole before Russell responded with an exceptional final effort to secure Mercedes’ front-row advantage.

Verstappen, meanwhile, had set the quickest middle sector and appeared on course to challenge for pole before losing control through Turn 9. The reigning world champion slid into the barriers at high speed, bringing out yellow flags. Fortunately, the Dutchman emerged from the incident unharmed.

Leclerc will line up second for Ferrari, while seven-time world champion Hamilton completed the top three after posting a best time of 1:06.408.

Mercedes also enjoyed an excellent qualifying session with rookie Kimi Antonelli taking fourth, just 0.301 seconds off Russell’s benchmark.

Ferrari and Mercedes Lead the Charge

Despite the late disappointment, Verstappen’s earlier Q3 effort of 1:06.475 was enough to secure fifth place on the grid.

McLaren’s championship contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualified sixth and seventh respectively, while Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form by claiming eighth.

Racing Bulls duo Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top ten after both drivers produced strong late improvements in Q2 to reach the final qualifying segment.

Q1: Williams and Aston Martin Suffer Early Exit

The opening qualifying segment saw McLaren initially set the pace as Norris posted a 1:07.259, before Antonelli briefly topped the timing screens with a 1:07.083.

While the leading teams progressed comfortably, several established names endured disappointing exits.

Carlos Sainz was eliminated in 17th after sliding wide at the final corner on his decisive lap. Williams teammate Alexander Albon also failed to advance, while Cadillac pairing Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas exited alongside Aston Martin veterans Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Antonelli Stars in Q2

The second qualifying session proved even more competitive.

Leclerc initially led the way with a 1:07.030, but Antonelli stole the spotlight with a brilliant 1:06.763 to top the session for Mercedes.

Russell faced a nervous finish after locking up at Turn 3 and aborting his first flying lap, leaving himself without a representative time before the final runs.

Lawson and Lindblad both delivered under pressure to progress into Q3, while Verstappen squeezed through in tenth after Pierre Gasly narrowly missed out by just 0.040 seconds.

Gasly was joined in elimination by Gabriel Bortoleto, Oliver Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto.

Austrian Grand Prix Set for Exciting Battle

Russell’s pole position gives Mercedes a major opportunity heading into Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, with Ferrari locking out the second and third positions and Verstappen facing the challenge of fighting from fifth at Red Bull’s home circuit.

With the leading six drivers separated by less than four-tenths of a second before Verstappen’s crash, the stage is set for another closely contested Formula 1 race at the Red Bull Ring.
