Formula E Heads to Shanghai for Crucial Double-Header as Title Fight Intensifies

Shanghai, China, July 1, 2026: The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend for Rounds 12 and 13 of the 2025/26 season, with the title battle entering a decisive phase as just 25 points separate the top three drivers in the standings.

As the second stop of Formula E’s Asian triple-header, the Shanghai E-Prix promises two action-packed races at one of the championship’s fastest permanent circuits, while the all-new GEN4 Formula E race car makes its first public appearance in Asia.

Shanghai Double-Header Could Shape the Championship

With only six races remaining in the season and three double-header weekends left before the finale in London, every point will be crucial in the fight for both the Drivers’ and Teams’ World Championships.

Jaguar TCS Racing arrives in Shanghai leading both championship standings and boasting an impressive record at the Chinese venue. The British manufacturer is the only team to have won more than one Formula E race at the Shanghai International Circuit, giving it added confidence heading into the weekend.

Shanghai International Circuit Offers High-Speed Challenge

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, the 3.051-kilometre Shanghai International Circuit features 12 corners arranged in a layout inspired by the Chinese character “上” (“Shang”), meaning “up above.”

The clockwise circuit combines long straights with flowing high-speed corners, creating multiple overtaking opportunities and placing a premium on energy management, race strategy, and precision driving.

Returning to Shanghai for a third consecutive season, Formula E once again visits one of China’s premier motorsport venues and the country’s automotive capital.

Maximilian Günther Targets Repeat Success

DS PENSKE driver Maximilian Günther returns to a circuit where he enjoyed one of his strongest performances last season, securing pole position and victory as part of the team’s maiden Formula E one-two finish.

“Happy to be back racing in Shanghai,” Günther said.

“It’s a circuit that holds great memories for me from last season, where we secured pole position and a race win as part of the team’s first-ever one-two finish. The track is fast and flowing, with several good overtaking opportunities, making it one I really enjoy driving.

“We arrive in Shanghai with some positive momentum from the Sanya race and are focused on putting together a strong weekend.”

António Félix da Costa Eyes More Jaguar Success

Jaguar driver António Félix da Costa believes his team can further strengthen its championship lead after narrowly missing an even bigger points haul in Sanya.

“The races come thick and fast at this point of the season, so I’m really looking forward to the next rounds in Shanghai,” Da Costa said.

“We know we could have taken even more from Sanya and that gives us added motivation heading into the Shanghai double-header. Myself and the team have scored strongly there in the past and the aim is to do so again this weekend.”

GEN4 Formula E Car Makes Asian Debut

Ahead of the Shanghai E-Prix, Formula E officially unveiled the championship’s next-generation GEN4 race car in Asia during the “FE Meets Huangpu” event held at Century Square on Shanghai’s famous Nanjing Road.

The GEN4 machine, which will debut in competition during the 2026/27 season, represents the biggest technical evolution in Formula E history.

Adding a unique local touch, organisers also revealed a handcrafted 1:18-scale solid gold GEN4 model, created by historic Chinese jewellery manufacturer Lao Feng Xiang.

Championship Battle Remains Wide Open

Despite leading the standings, Mitch Evans still faces fierce competition as he pursues his maiden Formula E World Championship.

Recent races have demonstrated the competitiveness of the field:

  • Jake Dennis won the season opener in São Paulo before claiming another dominant victory in Sanya.
  • Nick Cassidy delivered Citroën Racing’s first Formula E victory in Mexico City.
  • Pascal Wehrlein triumphed for Porsche in Jeddah.
  • António Félix da Costa secured consecutive victories after joining Jaguar TCS Racing.
  • Nico Müller claimed his maiden Formula E victory in Berlin.
  • Nyck de Vries ended Mahindra Racing’s GEN3-era victory drought in Monaco.
  • Oliver Rowland added another Monaco victory to his impressive Formula E résumé.

Dennis’ maximum 28-point haul in Sanya has also propelled him back into championship contention, climbing to fifth in the standings.

Sustainability at the Heart of the Shanghai E-Prix

Formula E continues to expand its sustainability initiatives during the Shanghai event.

Key measures include increased reliance on Shanghai’s electrical grid instead of temporary generators, with supplementary power supplied using 100% renewable Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel reused from the Sanya E-Prix.

Freight transportation between Sanya and Shanghai will primarily be completed by road and sea rather than air, reducing logistics-related carbon emissions by up to tenfold.

The championship is also extending its hydration programme to eliminate single-use plastics across the paddock, renewing its Better Futures Fund partnership supporting vulnerable children in Shanghai, and continuing community engagement programmes including FIA Girls on Track, which will provide 100 young women with mentoring, workshops, and behind-the-scenes Formula E access.

Record-Breaking GEN4 Calendar Announced for 2026/27

Formula E also recently confirmed its biggest-ever calendar for the inaugural GEN4 era.

The 2026/27 season will begin with a night double-header in Jeddah in December before visiting Mexico City, the new Austin E-Prix, Miami, São Paulo, Sanya, Berlin, Monaco, London, Zandvoort, Madrid, Shanghai, and concluding with a double-header finale in Tokyo.

The championship will also introduce an all-new race format featuring the traditional E-Prix alongside a shorter, high-intensity E-Prix Unleashed race, designed to showcase the unrestricted performance of the new GEN4 cars.

Shanghai Weekend Set to Be Season Defining

With the championship battle tightening, the debut of the GEN4 car in Asia, and Jaguar looking to extend its advantage, the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix is shaping up to be one of the most significant weekends of the Formula E season.

As the countdown to the London finale continues, consistency, strategy, and race execution could prove decisive in determining who ultimately lifts the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship trophies.
