Jake Dennis Wins Dramatic Sanya E-Prix as Andretti Dominates, Felipe Drugovich Penalised After Race
Sanya, China, June 20, 2026: Jake Dennis delivered a masterclass in race management to claim victory at the 2026 Lianxin Sanya E-Prix, leading home an Andretti Formula E 1-2 on the road in Round 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. However, post-race drama saw teammate Felipe Drugovich stripped of second place after receiving a five-second penalty, reshuffling the podium and denying Andretti a historic one-two finish in the final classification.
Dennis crossed the line ahead of Drugovich after a chaotic race featuring a red flag, two Full Course Yellow periods, and multiple championship twists. The victory marked the Briton’s second win of the 2025-26 Formula E season and his second triumph from pole position this year.
Drugovich Penalty Changes Podium Order
Andretti appeared set to celebrate its first-ever Formula E one-two finish after Dennis and Drugovich controlled much of the race from the front row. However, race stewards handed Drugovich a five-second time penalty for contact with Porsche Formula E Team driver Pascal Wehrlein at Turn 9.
The penalty dropped the Brazilian from second to fifth in the final results, promoting CUPRA KIRO rookie Pepe Martí to second place and Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries to third.
Despite the setback, Drugovich continued his impressive recent form after securing another podium finish in Monaco, highlighting a remarkable turnaround in his maiden full Formula E campaign.
Dennis Executes Perfect Strategy
Starting from Julius Baer Pole Position, Dennis and Drugovich worked together in the opening stages, managing energy efficiently while controlling the pace.
The decisive moment came through strategic deployment of ATTACK MODE. Although both Andretti drivers briefly dropped into the pack, they timed their energy usage perfectly and surged back to the front during the closing stages.
Dennis held firm under pressure to secure a crucial victory and strengthen Andretti’s position in the championship battle.
Speaking after the race, Dennis said:
“I’m really emotional, it’s incredible to win this race. We managed to turn it around and were super efficient on those last 15 laps to get the win. An Andretti one-two on track was fantastic, and Felipe did an incredible job. The car was amazing at the end, and we deserved this victory.”
Martí Continues Sensational Rookie Form
One of the standout performances of the race came from CUPRA KIRO’s Pepe Martí.
The Spanish rookie produced a stunning recovery drive from near the back of the field following the red flag restart, charging through the pack to finish third on the road before inheriting second after Drugovich’s penalty.
Martí’s runner-up finish follows his maiden Formula E podium in Monaco and further cements his reputation as one of the championship’s rising stars.
“The team gave me a great car, and we made the right call with ATTACK MODE,” Martí said. “Everybody did their job perfectly, and I’m happy to be on the podium again.”
Championship Battle Tightens Despite Evans Setback
The race delivered significant implications for the ABB FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Championship.
Championship leader Mitch Evans endured a difficult afternoon after becoming involved in a collision with Lola Yamaha ABT’s Zane Maloney at the hairpin, severely compromising his race.
However, Evans retained the championship lead after his closest rival, Oliver Rowland, squandered a potential podium finish with a late-race mistake that sent the Nissan driver into the barriers.
Further frustration for title contenders came as Edo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein both failed to score points.
Following Round 11, Evans continues to lead the standings by 19 points over Rowland.
