Nyck de Vries Wins Thrilling 2026 Tokyo E-Prix as Formula E Title Fight Heads to London Finale

Tokyo, Japan, July 26, 2026: Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries produced a masterclass in strategy and energy management to win the 2026 TDK Tokyo E-Prix Round 15, setting up a thrilling finale to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in London.

Starting fifth on the grid in tricky mixed-weather conditions, the Dutchman and Mahindra Racing gambled on a setup suited to a drying track after heavy rain earlier in the afternoon. The decision paid off perfectly as de Vries surged through the field, overtaking reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland after activating his ATTACK MODE on Lap 28.

A late Red Flag helped preserve his advantage, allowing the former Formula E World Champion to secure Mahindra Racing’s second victory of the 2025/26 season—the team’s first multiple-win campaign since the 2017/18 championship.

Nick Cassidy and Jake Dennis Complete the Podium

Citroën Racing’s Nick Cassidy delivered one of the standout drives of the race, climbing from 13th on the grid to finish second. Like Mahindra, Citroën opted for a setup favouring dry conditions, enabling Cassidy to charge through the field once the circuit began to dry.

Andretti Formula E’s Jake Dennis produced an equally remarkable recovery, rising from 18th on the grid to claim the final podium position. Dennis overtook Oliver Rowland in the closing laps after the Nissan driver’s late ATTACK MODE activation and limited usable energy left him vulnerable.

The podium finish proved even more significant as Dennis emerged from Tokyo leading the Drivers’ World Championship heading into the season finale.

Championship Battle Set for Dramatic London Finale

The Tokyo E-Prix dramatically reshaped the Drivers’ Championship after two major title contenders endured disastrous races.

Porsche Formula E driver Pascal Wehrlein failed to score for the second consecutive race, while Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans retired despite leading the race at one stage.

Dennis now heads the standings, with Evans just two points behind in second place and Wehrlein slipping to third. Only five points separate the top three drivers, ensuring the championship will be decided during the double-header finale in London on 15-16 August.

Although Jaguar retained its lead in the Teams’ Championship, Dennis’ result was enough to secure the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E Manufacturers’ World Championship for Porsche.

Nyck de Vries: “We Were a Little Bit Lucky”

Reflecting on his victory, de Vries admitted that Mahindra’s strategy gamble played a decisive role.

“We opted for a drying track and, in hindsight, that obviously worked out in our favour. It was very important to save energy at the beginning because once the track dried, you needed the energy.”

He also acknowledged the timing of the late Red Flag.

“I think we were a little bit lucky with the Red Flag because Jake was coming on strong in ATTACK MODE. I’m very proud of my team who executed a great race and scored our second win of the season.”

Jake Dennis Confident Ahead of London

Dennis believes Andretti has all the ingredients needed to fight for the championship after becoming the new Drivers’ Championship leader.

“At one point I was 35 seconds behind the leader, and to almost win it with no Safety Car is pretty impressive. Championship leader sounds incredible. I’m fully motivated and focused to get the job done. It’s going to be an incredible fight.”

Cassidy dedicated his runner-up finish to everyone at Citroën Racing and Stellantis Motorsport following a difficult period for the team.

The New Zealander also thanked the Japanese fans, noting that Tokyo has played a significant role in building his racing career and made the podium finish particularly meaningful.
