India Auto Industry Records Strong Double-Digit Growth in April 2026 as Passenger Vehicle, Two-Wheeler Sales Hit New Highs

New Delhi, India, May 14, 2026: India’s automobile industry started FY2026-27 on a strong note, with domestic vehicle sales, production and exports posting robust year-on-year growth across segments in April 2026, according to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The industry recorded total production of 29,22,427 units in April 2026, up 26% from 23,18,934 units in April 2025, while total domestic sales climbed 27.9% to 23,16,671 units. Exports also surged 38% year-on-year to 6,28,128 units.

Passenger vehicles (PVs) achieved their highest-ever April sales at 4,37,312 units, registering 25.4% growth over the same month last year. Three-wheelers also posted a record April with sales of 65,668 units, up 32.8%, while two-wheeler sales jumped 28.4% to 18,72,691 units.

Commenting on the performance, Rajesh Menon said the industry continued the strong momentum seen in the second half of FY2025-26 despite concerns around rising commodity prices and geopolitical disruptions in West Asia.

Passenger Vehicles See Record Demand

Utility vehicles remained the primary growth driver within the passenger vehicle segment. Domestic utility vehicle sales rose 21.5% year-on-year to 2,44,280 units in April 2026, while passenger car sales increased 32.7% to 1,20,945 units. Vans also registered 14.4% growth at 13,087 units.

Among automakers, Maruti Suzuki India led the PV market with domestic sales of 1,87,704 units, followed by Hyundai Motor India at 51,902 units and Mahindra & Mahindra at 56,331 units.

Kia India sold 27,286 units during the month, while Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded domestic sales of 30,156 units.

In the SUV category, strong demand was seen for compact and mid-size utility vehicles. Models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Fronx, Hyundai Creta and Venue, Kia Seltos and Sonet, and Mahindra Scorpio and XUV range contributed significantly to overall growth.

Two-Wheeler Segment Accelerates

The two-wheeler industry witnessed broad-based growth across scooters, motorcycles and mopeds.

Motorcycle domestic sales surged 30.6% year-on-year to 11,38,452 units, while scooter sales rose 26.2% to 6,91,993 units. Mopeds posted 9% growth at 42,246 units.

Hero MotoCorp emerged as one of the biggest gainers, with domestic sales increasing sharply to 5,32,433 units from 2,88,524 units a year earlier. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India sold 4,84,972 units, while TVS Motor Company recorded 3,48,545 units in domestic sales.

Electric scooters also continued gaining traction. Ather Energy posted domestic sales of 22,832 units, while Bajaj Auto sold 34,304 Chetak electric scooters. TVS Motor Company sold 37,193 units of its iQube electric scooter range.

Premium motorcycle categories above 250cc also maintained healthy momentum, led by Royal Enfield, which recorded domestic sales of 1,04,129 motorcycles in April 2026.

Three-Wheeler and Export Growth Remain Strong

The three-wheeler segment saw particularly strong growth in passenger carriers and exports.

Passenger carrier domestic sales rose 31.1% to 52,655 units, while goods carriers grew 45.1% to 11,806 units.

Bajaj Auto remained the dominant player in the segment with domestic three-wheeler sales of 38,147 units and exports of 34,726 units.

Overall automobile exports increased to 6,28,128 units from 4,55,330 units in April 2025. Two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of exports at 5,09,199 units, followed by passenger vehicles at 67,308 units and three-wheelers at 50,655 units.

Industry analysts believe sustained consumer demand, improved rural sentiment, new model launches and rising adoption of electric mobility contributed to the strong start for the Indian automotive sector in FY2026-27.
