Lamborghini Miura Leads 60th Anniversary Mid-Engined Car Showcase in London
London, England, October 16, 2026: The Lamborghini Miura will headline a special gathering of pioneering mid-engined cars at the St James’s Motoring Spectacle in central London on October 31, marking 60 years since the revolutionary supercar helped transform high-performance automotive design.
Organised by the Royal Automobile Club as part of London Motor Week, the free-to-attend motoring event will bring more than 150 automotive exhibits to Pall Mall. The display will celebrate the evolution of the mid-engined layout, which has become a defining feature of modern supercars and hypercars.
Launched in 1966, the Lamborghini Miura changed the approach to performance car engineering by positioning its V12 engine transversely behind the passenger compartment, rather than ahead of the driver. Inspired by the mid-engined configuration used in Formula 1, the layout helped deliver improved weight distribution and handling, establishing a template for generations of high-performance road cars.
The Miura was also a performance landmark, becoming the world’s fastest production car at the time of its launch. Its combination of striking styling, powerful V12 engine and innovative engineering helped establish Lamborghini as a major name in the supercar segment.
Lamborghini Miura to Reunite with Three 1966 Pioneers
Joining the Miura at the 60th anniversary display will be three other cars that helped popularise the mid-engined configuration: the Lotus Europa, De Tomaso Mangusta and Unipower GT.
The Lotus Europa brought mid-engined engineering to a more accessible sports car. Drawing on Lotus’s extensive Formula 1 experience, the model went on sale in European markets before the end of 1966, extending the benefits of the layout beyond the exotic supercar category.
The De Tomaso Mangusta followed in 1967, featuring a Ford V8 engine. Just over 400 examples were built before the model was replaced by the Pantera in 1971.
Completing the quartet is the British-built Unipower GT, a compact specialist sports car powered by a Mini engine. Hand-assembled by Universal Power Drives at facilities in Perivale and Park Royal, London, the Unipower GT was produced between 1966 and 1970.
The four cars will come together in a rare anniversary display, highlighting how manufacturers with different engineering approaches embraced the same fundamental configuration during a pivotal period in automotive history.
Modern Hypercars Showcase the Mid-Engined Legacy
The anniversary celebration will also look at how the mid-engined concept has evolved into the modern hypercar era. The neighbouring Modern Design display will feature an impressive collection of contemporary performance machines, including the Aston Martin Valhalla, Ferrari SF90 XX, Maserati MCPURA Cielo, Porsche Carrera GT and a Koenigsegg.
Together, the historic and contemporary displays will demonstrate the continuing relevance of the mid-engined layout in delivering performance, balance and distinctive design.
Ford Fiesta, Golf GTI and Benz Patent-Motorwagen Also Celebrated
The St James’s Motoring Spectacle will commemorate several other significant automotive anniversaries in 2026.
The Ford Fiesta will be recognised on its 50th anniversary. The model became Britain’s best-selling car of all time, playing a major role in making compact motoring accessible to millions of motorists. The iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI will also mark 50 years since its introduction, celebrating its contribution to the development of the hot hatch segment.
The Royal Automobile Club will additionally mark 140 years since the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely regarded as the world’s first production car.
Pall Mall will be closed to through traffic during the event, creating an open-air automotive exhibition in the heart of London.
London Motor Week Culminates with Veteran Car Run
The St James’s Motoring Spectacle is among the highlights of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week, which includes anniversary dinners, awards presentations and the Art of Motoring Exhibition.
Another major attraction is the RM Sotheby’s London auction, which will return to The Peninsula London with a selection of collector cars.
London Motor Week will conclude on November 1, when more than 400 veteran cars are scheduled to depart Hyde Park at daybreak for the 2026 RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
With the Lamborghini Miura and three fellow pioneers reunited alongside modern hypercars, the October 31 gathering promises a celebration of six decades of mid-engined automotive innovation.
