Marc Marquez Wins Malaysian MotoGP for 80th Career Victory, Moves Closer to 2026 World Title
Sepang, Malaysia, November 1, 2026: Marc Marquez strengthened his grip on the 2026 MotoGP World Championship with a commanding victory at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia, securing his seventh Grand Prix win of the season and the 80th of his career. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider crossed the finish line 4.1 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta to take another significant step towards an eighth premier-class world title.
Marquez now holds a 44-point advantage over injured championship rival Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing, while Marco Bezzecchi trails the Spaniard by 67 points after finishing sixth at the Sepang International Circuit.
The Malaysian GP victory puts Marquez in a position to clinch the 2026 MotoGP championship at next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, where he could secure the title at the Lusail International Circuit.
Joining Marquez on the podium were Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta in second and BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider Alex Marquez in third. Acosta completed an excellent weekend after winning Saturday’s Tissot Sprint, while Alex converted his pole position into a podium finish.
Marc Marquez takes the early lead at Sepang
Marc Marquez made a strong start from the front of the grid to take the holeshot, although younger brother Alex briefly challenged him at Turn 4. However, the Gresini rider ran wide, allowing Marc to retain the lead.
The battle for third place was equally intense, with Enea Bastianini, Ai Ogura and Pedro Acosta fighting for position on the opening lap. Acosta recovered from a relatively slow start to move into third by the end of the lap.
Bezzecchi also made progress, moving into fourth after overtaking Ogura at Turn 14 on Lap 2.
Acosta soon demonstrated his pace, setting the fastest lap of the race and closing in on the leading Marquez brothers. As tyre management became increasingly important, Marc led Alex by around half a second, with Acosta less than four-tenths behind the Gresini rider.
Bezzecchi remained fourth, while Ogura followed his Aprilia team-mate.
Acosta overtakes Alex Marquez as Marc stretches his advantage
By Lap 9, Marc Marquez had extended his lead to 1.1 seconds. The advantage increased to 1.5 seconds a lap later as the Ducati rider continued to control the race.
Behind him, Acosta was putting increasing pressure on Alex Marquez. The KTM rider eventually made his move at Turn 9 on Lap 10 to take second place.
Bezzecchi also attempted to challenge Alex at Turn 14, but the Aprilia rider could not complete the overtake.
With Acosta moving into second, the attention shifted to the battle for the final podium position between Alex, Bezzecchi and Ogura. However, Marc continued to pull away, extending his advantage beyond two seconds.
The Spaniard was particularly impressive in the closing stages. With five laps remaining, his lead over Acosta had grown to 2.9 seconds before increasing further to more than four seconds at the chequered flag.
Marquez eventually secured victory by 4.1 seconds, completing a dominant performance at Sepang and recording his 80th Grand Prix victory.
Acosta and Alex Marquez complete the podium
Acosta secured second place for the second consecutive year at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Combined with his Sprint victory, the result capped an excellent weekend for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider.
Alex Marquez held on to third after starting from pole position, completing the podium behind his elder brother and Acosta.
Ai Ogura finished fourth after overtaking Bezzecchi, securing another strong result for the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team. Bastianini took fifth after capitalising on a last-lap mistake by Bezzecchi at Turn 14.
The Italian’s sixth-place finish was a significant setback for Bezzecchi’s championship ambitions, with the Aprilia rider now 67 points behind Marquez.
Luca Marini finished seventh for Honda HRC Castrol, narrowly ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio in eighth. Just 0.066 seconds separated the two Italians at the finish.
Brad Binder took ninth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, while Franco Morbidelli completed the top 10 for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team.
The remaining championship points went to Fabio Quartararo, Alex Rins, Francesco Bagnaia, Maverick Viñales and Iker Lecuona, who was standing in for the injured Fermin Aldeguer at BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP.
Marc Marquez could clinch eighth MotoGP title in Qatar
The championship battle now heads to the Qatar Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit, where Marquez will have his first opportunity to secure the 2026 MotoGP world title.
The Ducati rider enjoys a 44-point advantage over Martin, who is recovering from a broken wrist, and a 67-point lead over Bezzecchi.
Marquez can wrap up the championship in Qatar by scoring 30 points more than Martin and eight points more than Bezzecchi over the relevant championship-scoring events.
With seven Grand Prix victories already to his name this season and 80 career wins, Marquez has firmly established himself as the rider to beat in 2026.
Aprilia, meanwhile, will be hoping Martin can return to action and mount a challenge as the championship enters its decisive phase. Bezzecchi also faces an increasingly difficult task if Aprilia are to prevent Marquez from adding another title to his remarkable MotoGP record.
