Pedro Acosta Wins Dramatic Malaysian MotoGP Sprint as Marc Marquez Extends Championship Lead
Sepang, Malaysia, October 31, 2026: Pedro Acosta returned to the top step of the podium with a hard-fought victory in a dramatic Tissot Sprint at the 2026 PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider mastered changing track conditions at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit on Saturday to claim his second Sprint victory, finishing just over half a second ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez.
Marquez secured second place for Ducati Lenovo Team to extend his championship advantage, while Aprilia Racing’s Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium in third. The result saw Marquez increase his lead over the absent Jorge Martin to 19 points, while Bezzecchi’s deficit to the championship leader grew to 52 points.
The 2026 Malaysian GP Sprint witnessed plenty of drama, with intermittent rain prompting several riders to consider switching to wet-weather bikes. However, the leading group elected to remain on dry tyres, a decision that ultimately paid off.
Alex Marquez, who had started from pole position, initially controlled the race but crashed out at Turn 14 on Lap 2, handing the lead to Trackhouse MotoGP rider Ai Ogura.
Alex Marquez crashes as rain disrupts Sprint
At the start, Alex Marquez made a strong getaway to hold the lead into Turn 1. Ogura also enjoyed an excellent launch, overtaking Marc Marquez to move into second place, while Pedro Acosta quickly joined the battle at the front.
By the end of the opening lap, Acosta had moved ahead of Marc Marquez into third, with Bezzecchi following closely behind the championship leader.
The complexion of the race changed on Lap 2 when the white flag was displayed, indicating spots of rain around the circuit and allowing riders to enter the pits to switch to their second bikes equipped with wet-weather setups.
Jack Miller was among the first to attempt the switch, but the Australian encountered a problem when he arrived at the Pramac Yamaha pit box, where his replacement machine was not ready.
There was further drama when Alex Marquez, who had maintained a comfortable lead despite the changing conditions, lost control at Turn 14 and crashed out. The Gresini rider escaped injury, but his Sprint challenge was over.
Ogura inherited the lead, with Acosta close behind and Marc Marquez running third.
As rain intensified around Turns 4, 5 and 6, teams and riders faced a difficult decision over whether to switch to wet tyres. With only six laps remaining, the leading group decided to stay out on slicks.
Joan Mir, Iker Lecuona and Franco Morbidelli opted to pit at the end of Lap 4, gambling on the wet-weather setup as the conditions continued to change.
Acosta overtakes Ogura to take control
With four laps remaining, the battle at the front intensified as Acosta closed in on Ogura. The KTM rider eventually made his move to take the lead, although Ogura briefly fought back.
Acosta responded immediately to regain the position, while Marc Marquez took advantage of the battle to move past Ogura into second.
The Japanese rider refused to give up and launched another attack on Marquez at Turn 4. However, the Ducati rider responded at Turn 5 with a decisive move to reclaim second place.
Bezzecchi also capitalised on the opportunity, overtaking Ogura at Turn 9 to move into third and complete a strong recovery through the leading group.
With the rain remaining manageable, the riders who had switched to wet-weather bikes failed to gain an advantage. Acosta maintained his composure at the front and crossed the finish line to secure his second Tissot Sprint victory.
The KTM rider finished just over half a second ahead of Marc Marquez, with Bezzecchi completing the podium.
Marc Marquez extends championship advantage
Marquez’s second-place finish proved particularly valuable in the championship battle. With Jorge Martin sidelined following his wrist injury, the Ducati rider extended his advantage over the Aprilia racer to 19 points.
Bezzecchi finished third but now trails Marquez by 52 points, leaving the Italian with an increasingly difficult task in the remaining rounds.
Ogura narrowly missed out on a podium after an impressive performance, finishing fourth ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio in fifth.
Francesco Bagnaia secured sixth place for Ducati Lenovo Team, followed by Brad Binder in seventh for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.
Diogo Moreira finished eighth for Pro Honda LCR, while Enea Bastianini claimed the final championship point in ninth for Red Bull KTM Tech3.
With Acosta returning to winning form, Marc Marquez strengthening his championship position and Bezzecchi remaining in the hunt, the stage is set for Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix.
Alex Marquez will also be looking to bounce back from his Sprint crash as he attempts to convert his qualifying pole position into a strong result in the full-length race.
