Lando Norris Wins 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix After McLaren Team Drama, Verstappen and Antonelli Complete Podium

Budapest, Hungary, July 26, 2026: Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship with a composed and strategic drive in the Hungarian Grand Prix, capitalising on McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri’s late retirement to seal victory at the Hungaroring.

The McLaren driver converted pole position into a long-awaited win after a race that featured an intense intra-team battle, strategic pit stops and heartbreak for Piastri, who looked set to continue his winning run before suffering a gearbox failure.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second, while Kimi Antonelli secured another podium for Mercedes in third.

Piastri Overtakes Norris at the Start

Although Norris started from pole position, he lost the lead on the opening lap after running wide at Turn 2. Piastri immediately seized the opportunity with a brilliant cutback move to take the lead and began building a small advantage.

Verstappen slotted into third place ahead of Ferrari duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, while both Ferrari drivers, running on Soft tyres, were unable to challenge the Red Bull despite their early pace advantage.

Hamilton became the first of the frontrunners to pit on lap 14, switching to Hard tyres. Verstappen responded one lap later and briefly emerged behind the Ferrari before reclaiming third place with a decisive move into Turn 1.

Norris Turns the Race Around

The decisive moment arrived during the second round of pit stops.

Piastri made his second stop on lap 34 but rejoined into heavy traffic, encountering Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. Contact with Sainz’s Williams cost the Australian valuable time and compromised his advantage.

Norris extended his stint, using clear air to produce a series of rapid laps before making his own second stop. The strategy worked perfectly, allowing him to rejoin ahead of Piastri and take control of the race.

After overtaking Mercedes driver Antonelli, who had extended his opening stint in an alternative strategy, Norris inherited the effective race lead.

Gearbox Failure Ends Piastri’s Challenge

McLaren’s hopes of a one-two finish disappeared on lap 56 when Piastri retired with an apparent gearbox problem while chasing his team-mate.

The retirement triggered a Virtual Safety Car, allowing Norris to make a final precautionary pit stop for fresh tyres without sacrificing the lead.

Verstappen stayed out to move into second place, while Antonelli also remained on track to secure third.

Hamilton initially appeared to be in podium contention during the VSC period, but a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane dropped the Ferrari driver behind both Antonelli and team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Norris Cruises to First Win of 2026

With the race back under green flag conditions, Norris comfortably controlled the closing laps to take the chequered flag by 15.080 seconds over Verstappen.

Antonelli held off late pressure to complete the podium for Mercedes, while Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Hamilton.

Isack Hadjar continued his impressive rookie campaign by finishing sixth for Red Bull, while George Russell recovered from an anti-stall issue at the start that dropped him to 19th before fighting back to seventh.

Liam Lawson finished eighth for Racing Bulls, ahead of Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg, while Arvid Lindblad secured the final championship point in tenth.
