Nothing Begins Rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 Powered by Android 16, Introducing Smarter, More Connected Experiences

London-based consumer technology innovator Nothing has officially begun the public rollout of Nothing OS 4.0, its latest software experience powered by Android 16. Built on the strong foundation of OS 3.0, the new update delivers a more refined, intelligent, and creatively focused system that enhances the brand’s signature design language while unlocking next-generation AI-driven capabilities.

Nothing OS 4.0 lays the groundwork for powerful new experiences, including advanced AI creation tools via Essential Apps, a redesigned visual identity, and deeper device connections across the ecosystem.

Live Updates and Enhanced Glyph Interface

A key highlight of Nothing OS 4.0 is the introduction of Live Updates via the Glyph Interface. Users can now get real-time ride, delivery, and timer information directly on both the lock screen and the Glyph lights—allowing instant progress tracking without opening any app.

Any app supporting Android 16’s Live Updates feature will now automatically integrate with Nothing’s Glyph Progress, significantly expanding app compatibility compared to previous versions.

Refined Extra Dark Mode

Nothing has also introduced a more immersive Extra Dark Mode, enhancing contrast, reducing power usage, and offering a calmer, more focused visual experience. The feature now extends to first-party apps such as Essential Space and Launcher, with broader integration set to roll out soon.

Smoother Animations and Haptic Enhancements

Nothing OS 4.0 elevates the system’s physical feel through improved animation depth and tactile response:

  • Enhanced interaction animations create a more fluid, responsive interface.
  • New haptic feedback at volume limits gives users a subtle physical cue when they reach maximum or minimum volume.
  • App open/close animations add depth by gently scaling the home screen background for a more immersive transition.
  • Improved notification interactions deliver a sense of weight and rebound for a more cohesive touch experience.

Customizable Widgets and Home Screen Controls

To give users more personalisation options, Nothing OS 4.0 adds:

  • New 1×1 and 2×1 widget sizes for Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time
  • Pop-up View for running two floating apps simultaneously
  • Hidden Icons to keep a clean layout while maintaining easy access
  • A more flexible home screen that supports truly minimal or information-rich setups

Exclusive Features for Phone (3)

Nothing OS 4.0 unlocks new capabilities tailored for Phone (3) owners, including:

  • Advanced Flip to Glyph controls
  • Refined Pocket Mode
  • New Glyph Toys such as Hourglass and Lunar Cycle
  • Glyph Mirror Selfie, now able to save both the flipped and original version of a photo

The update is now rolling out to Phone (3) and will expand to other Nothing and CMF by Nothing devices in the coming weeks.

Nothing Playground: AI-Powered App Creation

A standout addition is Nothing Playground, an interactive space that allows users to build their own Essential Appssimply by describing what they need. Nothing’s AI generates the widget instantly, which can then be added directly to the home screen.

These creations live inside the new Widget Drawer, introduced with Nothing OS 4.0—a unified place to organise all Essential Apps and user-created tools.
