MotoGP Indonesia GP 2026: Jorge Martin Leads Marc Marquez by Just Two Points in Thrilling Title Fight
Lombok, Indonesia, October 7, 2026: The 2026 MotoGP World Championship heads to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok for the Indonesian Grand Prix with Jorge Martin holding a slender two-point lead over Marc Marquez after 16 Grands Prix. It is the closest top-two championship gap at this stage of a MotoGP season, setting up another fascinating battle between the Aprilia Racing and Ducati Lenovo Team riders.
Martin arrived in Japan with a 12-point advantage over reigning World Champion Marc Marquez, but the Ducati rider produced a crucial weekend at Motegi to dramatically close the gap. Marquez won the Tissot Sprint and backed it up with a strong Sunday performance, collecting 37 points across the weekend.
The result has transformed the championship battle heading into Indonesia, where Martin will be looking to regain momentum and extend his advantage.
Martin Has the Mandalika Advantage
The odds appear to favour Martin and Aprilia heading into the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The #89 has already enjoyed success at Mandalika, winning the Indonesian Grand Prix in 2024 after finishing second at the circuit the previous year. Aprilia’s strong form this season also makes Martin one of the riders to beat this weekend.
However, there is one unknown. Martin did not race at Mandalika last year after fracturing his right collarbone in Japan, meaning he will be returning to the Indonesian circuit after missing the 2025 race.
Marc Marquez, meanwhile, arrives with a difficult record at Mandalika. The six-time MotoGP World Champion is yet to see the chequered flag on a Sunday at the Indonesian circuit and has suffered injuries at the venue, including after his collision with Marco Bezzecchi last year.
Marquez’s challenge, therefore, will be to overcome his Mandalika struggles and maintain the championship momentum he gained in Japan.
Bezzecchi Still in the Championship Fight
While the spotlight remains firmly on Martin and Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi cannot be ruled out of the title battle.
The Aprilia rider has scored four podium finishes in the last five Grands Prix, all of them third-place results. Despite losing further ground to the leading duo in Japan, Bezzecchi remains within 49 points of championship leader Martin.
With Mandalika a circuit where Bezzecchi was particularly strong last season, another big weekend could quickly bring him back into contention.
Aldeguer, Acosta and Alex Marquez Among Contenders
Last year’s Indonesian Grand Prix winner Fermin Aldeguer will be hoping to rediscover the form that carried him to victory at Mandalika. The Gresini rider faces a difficult task defending his crown but remains a potential contender for the podium.
Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez, who finished second and third respectively behind Aldeguer last year, will also be looking for stronger weekends after difficult outings in Japan.
Acosta struggled for Sunday pace at Motegi, while Alex Marquez’s race ended after he received two Long Lap penalties. Both riders have the pace to challenge at the front in Indonesia.
Enea Bastianini is another rider to watch after producing an impressive late-race rhythm in Japan. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider will be hoping to reproduce that performance at Mandalika.
The Trackhouse Racing pairing of Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura will also be looking to make an impact, while home-region interest will be high around Ogura following his P6 finish at his home Japanese Grand Prix.
Di Giannantonio Searching for a Podium Return
It is also an important weekend for the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli racing at a venue that carries added significance for the squad.
Di Giannantonio has not finished inside the top five on a Sunday since taking fourth at the Dutch Grand Prix, a run that has seen him drop to sixth in the championship standings.
The Italian also battled through the pain in Japan after being taken out by Alex Marquez during Saturday’s Sprint. He will be hoping to return to full fitness and challenge for a podium in Indonesia.
Moreira Brings Momentum to Mandalika
Rookie Diogo Moreira showed further signs of his growing potential in Japan by claiming his first MotoGP Sprint podium, despite crashing out of Sunday’s Grand Prix.
The Pro Honda LCR rider has already enjoyed success at Mandalika in Moto3 and Moto2, making Indonesia another circuit where the Brazilian could surprise the established MotoGP contenders.
Fabio Quartararo will also be worth watching after extracting strong performance from the Yamaha at Motegi. The Frenchman finished seventh at Mandalika last season, while teammate Alex Rins briefly ran as high as second in the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix.
Bagnaia Continues Search for Form
For Francesco Bagnaia, the Indonesian Grand Prix represents another opportunity to turn around a difficult run of form.
The Ducati Lenovo Team rider, who won the 2023 Indonesian Grand Prix, could only manage eighth in Japan. The result extended his podium drought to seven Grands Prix.
Bagnaia will be hoping that a return to Mandalika, where he has previously stood on the top step, can provide the breakthrough he needs.
Johann Zarco, Brad Binder and Luca Marini are also expected to fight for strong points. Marini finished fifth at Mandalika last year, matching his best result of the 2025 season, while his P10 at Motegi maintained his impressive record of scoring points in every Sunday race in 2026.
Aleix Espargaro Returns
Honda will welcome Aleix Espargaro back to the MotoGP grid this weekend. The Spaniard returns as Joan Mir remains sidelined through illness, while Somkiat Chantra returns to WorldSBK action in Portugal.
Maverick Viñales will also be looking for more after completing his comeback weekend in Japan without major incident. Meanwhile, Prima Pramac Yamaha riders Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlioglu will continue their battle for valuable championship points.
For Razgatlioglu, Mandalika is a particularly significant venue. The Turkish rider enjoyed considerable success there in WorldSBK, taking three victories in 2022, and also secured his first WorldSBK title in Indonesia in 2021.
Two Points Separate Martin and Marquez
With just two points separating Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez after 16 Grands Prix, the 2026 MotoGP championship has entered another decisive phase.
Martin has the circuit form and Aprilia momentum on his side, while Marquez arrives in Indonesia with renewed confidence after his huge points haul at Motegi.
And with Bezzecchi still within 49 points of the championship lead, the title fight remains wide open.
Mandalika could therefore prove crucial in deciding which rider leaves Indonesia at the top of the MotoGP World Championship.
