George Russell Claims Pole Position for 2026 F1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Ahead of Hamilton and Antonelli
Barcelona, Spain, June 13, 2026: George Russell delivered a stunning lap to secure pole position for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, leading a closely fought qualifying session that saw Mercedes emerge as the team to beat while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out during Q3.
Russell, who had looked competitive throughout the weekend and topped Q2, produced a blistering lap of 1:14.679 in the dying moments of qualifying to secure his third pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver edged Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by just 0.064 seconds, while championship leader and Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli completed the top three.
The decisive final segment of qualifying was interrupted by a red flag after Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at Turn 4. The Monegasque driver ran wide onto the dusty outside line before spinning into the barriers, ending his session prematurely and leaving him without a representative Q3 time.
Before the stoppage, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen had traded fastest laps, but the final shootout after the restart belonged to Russell. The Briton initially set provisional pole with a 1:15.145 before improving significantly on his final run. Antonelli briefly moved to the top with a 1:14.998, only for Russell to respond with an even faster effort. Hamilton then split the Mercedes duo with a superb final lap to secure a front-row start for Ferrari.
McLaren’s Lando Norris narrowly missed out on the top three, qualifying fourth and just 0.003 seconds behind Antonelli. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen took fifth for Red Bull, ahead of team-mate Isack Hadjar, while Piastri ended the session seventh after failing to improve sufficiently on his final run.
Liam Lawson continued his impressive form by qualifying eighth for Racing Bulls, while Audi enjoyed another encouraging showing with Nico Hülkenberg taking ninth. Leclerc was classified 10th despite not setting a time in Q3.
Arvid Lindblad was the fastest driver eliminated in Q2, placing 11th ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly occupied 13th and 14th respectively, while Oliver Bearman rounded out the top 15 for Haas.
Home favourite Carlos Sainz endured a disappointing session, qualifying only 16th for Williams. Haas driver Esteban Ocon was eliminated in Q1 and will start 17th, ahead of Williams’ Alex Albon.
Cadillac locked out the 10th row with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas qualifying 19th and 20th respectively. Aston Martin suffered a difficult afternoon at their home race, with Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso occupying the final row of the grid.
With Russell starting from pole and Mercedes placing both cars inside the top three, the Silver Arrows head into Sunday’s race as favourites. However, Hamilton’s front-row start, McLaren’s strong pace and Verstappen’s race-day prowess promise an intriguing battle at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
