MotoGP Indonesia 2026: Luca Marini Leads Honda HRC Castrol Challenge at Mandalika

Lombok, Indonesia, October 6, 2026: Honda HRC Castrol heads to the Mandalika International Circuit for the 2026 Indonesian MotoGP, with Luca Marini looking to build on Honda’s strong record at the Lombok circuit. Marini will be joined by Honda HRC Development Rider Aleix Espargaro, who returns to MotoGP action as Joan Mir continues his recovery from injury.

Round 17 of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship comes just days after the Japanese Grand Prix, with the Honda HRC Castrol team making the journey directly from Tokyo to Lombok.

The 4.3-kilometre Mandalika International Circuit presents a demanding challenge for both riders and machinery. Its physical layout, combined with the hot and humid conditions that can affect the Indonesian Grand Prix, makes adaptability and race preparation particularly important.

Honda has traditionally enjoyed strong pace at Mandalika, while the Indonesian round also provides one of the most passionate atmospheres on the MotoGP calendar, with millions of Honda fans across the country.

Luca Marini targets strong MotoGP weekend in Indonesia

Luca Marini arrives in Lombok with confidence after showing flashes of strong pace at several races this season, including the Grands Prix of Hungary and San Marino.

Indonesia is also a circuit where Marini has enjoyed some of his best results since becoming a Honda rider. The Italian finished fifth at Mandalika in 2025, matching his best-ever result with the Honda RC213V.

Marini will now look to turn that previous form into another competitive weekend as Honda continues to extract more performance from the RC213V.

The first major target will be to make an immediate impact in Friday practice and secure direct passage into Q2. With weather conditions capable of changing quickly at Mandalika, a strong opening day could prove crucial to Honda’s weekend.

Marini said Mandalika is a circuit he enjoys and believes Honda has traditionally performed well at the track.

“It will be important to work in the correct way and avoid some of the mistakes we made last week in Motegi,” Marini said. “If we are strong on Friday we can put something together.”

The Honda rider also highlighted the importance of the Indonesian fans, describing the country as a special place to race as a Honda rider.

Aleix Espargaro returns as Joan Mir continues recovery

Honda HRC Development Rider Aleix Espargaro will take the second Honda HRC Castrol RC213V at Mandalika, replacing Joan Mir as the Spanish rider continues his recovery at home.

Espargaro is familiar with the Indonesian circuit but faces the challenge of quickly reacquainting himself with the Honda RC213V. His riding time on the Honda has been limited this season following an injury earlier in the year.

Rather than setting ambitious performance targets, Espargaro’s priority will be to understand the motorcycle and provide valuable feedback to Honda’s development programme.

The Mandalika circuit is particularly demanding physically, making the task more difficult for a rider returning after limited time on the bike.

Espargaro said he has realistic expectations for the weekend given his limited running and the physical demands of the Indonesian circuit.

“Let’s understand how we can best help the team and Honda this weekend and focus on that,” Espargaro said.

Weather could play a major role

The weather is expected to be one of the key variables throughout the MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix weekend.

Mandalika’s combination of heat, humidity and the possibility of rapidly changing conditions can put additional pressure on riders and teams. Tyre management, bike setup and the ability to react quickly to changing track conditions could therefore prove decisive.

For Honda, Friday’s sessions will be particularly important as Marini looks to secure direct Q2 qualification and Espargaro works on getting comfortable with the RC213V.

Honda looks to build on Mandalika form

Honda’s previous performances at Mandalika provide encouragement heading into Round 17. Marini’s fifth-place finish in 2025 was his joint-best result with Honda, while the RC213V has generally shown competitive potential at the Indonesian venue.

The team will now aim to maximise that potential across a weekend where track conditions and physical demands are likely to test both riders.

For Marini, the objective is clear: start strongly on Friday, qualify directly for Q2 and put himself in a position to fight for a strong result on Sunday.

For Espargaro, the Indonesian Grand Prix is primarily about rebuilding his rhythm on the RC213V and gathering useful information for Honda’s continued development work.

With the championship entering its final stages, MotoGP Indonesia 2026 at Mandalika promises another demanding test for Honda HRC Castrol as Marini and Espargaro look to make the most of the RC213V’s potential.
