Marc Marquez Wins MotoGP Japan GP, Cuts Jorge Martin’s Championship Lead to Two Points

Motegi, Japan, October 4, 2026: Marc Marquez produced a dominant performance at the 2026 MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix, completing a double victory at the Mobility Resort Motegi and moving to within just two points of championship leader Jorge Martin in the MotoGP riders’ standings.

The Ducati Lenovo Team rider battled past Martin in the second half of the 24-lap race before pulling clear to secure his 79th MotoGP victory. Martin finished second for Aprilia Racing, collecting 20 crucial championship points, while Marco Bezzecchi held off a late charge from Enea Bastianini to claim the final podium position.

The result sets up a thrilling championship battle heading into the next round in Indonesia, with Martin leading Marquez by just two points.

Martin Makes the Perfect Start

Starting from pole position, Jorge Martin got away cleanly to take the holeshot and immediately put Marc Marquez behind him. Marco Bezzecchi settled into third, while Alex Marquez moved past Pedro Acosta despite having to serve a double Long Lap penalty.

Acosta’s race quickly became more difficult, dropping to eighth by Lap 2 after losing positions to Enea Bastianini, Raul Fernandez and home favourite Ai Ogura.

Martin and Marc Marquez soon established themselves at the front. By Lap 5, just 0.4 seconds separated the two title contenders, with both riders producing lap times in the 1:43.6s range. Bezzecchi remained within striking distance, around 0.6 seconds behind Marquez.

Alex Marquez served his first Long Lap penalty on Lap 5, dropping to fifth, before completing the second on Lap 7 and falling to ninth.

Marc Marquez Makes His Move

By Lap 10, the leading pair had begun to pull away from Bezzecchi, with the gap between Martin and the Italian increasing to 1.9 seconds.

Marquez then made his move on Lap 11 at Turn 9. The eight-time World Champion launched his Ducati up the inside of Martin and successfully completed the overtake, taking control of the race.

Marquez quickly increased his advantage to 0.8 seconds, while Bezzecchi and Bastianini began to set faster laps than Martin.

Martin refused to let the Ducati rider disappear, however. He gradually began to reduce the deficit, with the gap coming down to 0.7 seconds by Lap 16. Despite the pressure, Marquez responded with a 1:43.291 fastest lap to extend his advantage to 1.2 seconds.

The race then became a battle of fastest laps behind the leader, with Bezzecchi and Bastianini both producing impressive late-race pace.

Bastianini Pushes Bezzecchi for Podium

While Marquez and Martin appeared relatively secure in first and second, the fight for third went down to the final lap.

Bastianini produced a remarkable sequence of fastest laps to close rapidly on Bezzecchi. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider entered the final lap just behind the Aprilia rider, but Bezzecchi remained composed under intense pressure.

Bastianini ultimately ran out of laps and had to settle for fourth, while Bezzecchi secured his second podium of the Japanese weekend.

At the front, Marquez crossed the finish line 1.2 seconds clear of Martin to complete a memorable Japanese Grand Prix double.

Marc Marquez Closes Championship Gap

The victory was particularly significant for Marquez after his disappointment in Austria. The reigning World Champion returned to the top step at the circuit where he secured the 2025 MotoGP World Championship last year.

Marquez now has 331 points, just two behind Martin’s 333 points with the championship heading to Indonesia.

Bezzecchi remains third in the championship on 284 points, 49 points behind Martin.

Martin’s second-place finish means he retains the championship lead, but the momentum has shifted firmly back towards Marquez with the title fight entering its decisive phase.
