Oliver Solberg Leads WRC Standings into High-Speed Rally Sweden Showdown

Umeรฅ, Sweden, February 12:ย Oliver Solberg heads intoย Rally Sweden 2026ย carrying the FIA World Rally Championship lead after his breakthrough victory at Rallye Monte-Carlo โ€” but the Toyota GAZOO Racing driver faces one of the toughest challenges of his season on home snow.

The 24-year-old arrives in Umeรฅ as both championship leader and local favourite, yet sweeping the road on what promises to be one of the fastest winter rallies in WRC history could prove decisive.

Solberg Embraces Home Pressure

Fresh off his maiden win of the 2026 WRC season, Solberg admits leading the standings at his home rally is surreal.

โ€œTo go to my home rally leading the championship is something crazy that I couldnโ€™t have dreamed of,โ€ said Solberg. โ€œItโ€™s an amazing feeling, but Iโ€™m still taking everything rally by rally. Rally Sweden has always been my favourite rally of the year.โ€

However, starting first on the road may not play to his advantage.

โ€œStarting first on the road in Sweden is maybe not always the best place to be,โ€ he added. โ€œMaybe on some stages I can have an advantage, and on others maybe not.โ€

With limited fresh snowfall this year, the road-sweeping effect could reduce grip for early starters.

Faster Than Ever: Conditions Set for Record Speeds

A prolonged cold snap across the Vรคsterbotten region has created a rock-solid frozen base across the snow-covered stages. Equipped with studded Hankook Winter i*Pike SR10W tyres, Rally1 cars are expected to deliver exceptionally high average speeds through the forests north of Umeรฅ.

But thereโ€™s a twist.

Unlike previous editions, the snowbanks are lower and less forgiving due to reduced snowfall. Traditionally used by drivers to lean on and rotate their cars at high speed, the softer snow walls may offer less margin for error in 2026 โ€” raising the stakes for every crew.

Lappi, starting further down the order, could benefit from cleaner and more compacted lines during Fridayโ€™s stages.

Meanwhile, Toyotaโ€™s charge is strengthened by:

  • Elfyn Evans, a two-time Rally Sweden winner
  • Takamoto Katsuta
  • Sami Pajari
  • Privateerย Lorenzo Bertelliย in the GR Yaris Rally1
