Kimi Antonelli Wins Japanese Grand Prix, Becomes Youngest F1 Championship Leader After Dramatic Suzuka Race
Suzuka, Japan, March 29, 2026: In a dramatic and action-packed race at Suzuka, Kimi Antonelli stormed to victory in the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, overcoming a poor старт and capitalising on a perfectly timed Safety Car to claim his second consecutive win—and make history as the youngest Drivers’ Championship leader in Formula 1.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team rookie endured a nightmare launch from pole, as both he and team-mate George Russell were swamped off the line. Oscar Piastri made a blistering старт to snatch the lead, slicing between the Mercedes pair, while Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris also surged вперед in a chaotic opening lap.
Antonelli quickly regrouped, carving his way back through the field, passing Lewis Hamilton to move into contention as the early battle for the lead intensified. Up front, Norris briefly challenged Piastri, even making a move stick before the McLaren driver retaliated immediately to reclaim P1 in a thrilling exchange.
The race turned decisively on lap 15. Norris triggered the first round of pit stops among the лидеры, but moments later the Safety Car was deployed following a heavy crash involving Oliver Bearman. The Haas driver was forced off track while battling Franco Colapinto and slammed into the barriers at high speed, bringing out the neutralisation.
That incident proved pivotal. Antonelli, who had yet to pit, gained a massive advantage with a ‘free stop’, emerging ahead of Piastri and Russell to take control of the race. Lewis Hamilton also benefited, temporarily moving into podium contention.
Once racing resumed, Antonelli showcased remarkable composure beyond his years, steadily pulling clear of Piastri. Behind them, a fierce стратегическая battle unfolded, with Hamilton initially taking third before being overtaken by Leclerc and later Russell in a tightly fought midfield scrap.
In the closing laps, Russell mounted pressure on Leclerc for the final podium position, but the Ferrari driver held firm to secure P3—his second podium of the season. Norris recovered to pass Hamilton late on, sealing fifth place.
Out front, however, there was no stopping Antonelli. The Italian crossed the line after 53 laps with a commanding 13.7-second advantage over Piastri, who celebrated his first podium of the season after a difficult старт to the campaign.
