Samsung SmartThings Becomes First Platform to Support Matter 1.5 Cameras, Expanding Smart Home Interoperability
Seoul, South Korea: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced a major upgrade to its smart home ecosystem, revealing that SmartThings now supports Matter 1.5, the latest version of the global smart home standard. With this move, Samsung SmartThings becomes the first smart home platform in the industry to support Matter-compatible cameras, further strengthening its leadership in connected living.
Starting later this month, Samsung will roll out SmartThings updates that expand its existing Matter device lineup—currently covering lights, door locks, switches, and sensors—by adding camera support. This update positions SmartThings as the smart home platform with the broadest support for Matter devices to date.
Samsung’s Vision for a Unified Smart Home Experience
“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of the SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”
Matter 1.5 Brings Camera Support and Enhanced Smart Home Features
Announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in November, Matter 1.5 introduces long-awaited camera support, alongside enhancements for closure operations such as blinds, awnings, and garage doors, as well as improved energy management capabilities.
The inclusion of cameras marks a significant milestone for the smart home industry, as cameras are a core component of modern home security. Matter 1.5 supports a wide range of camera use cases, including indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells, and more. Key features include:
- Live video streaming
- Two-way communication
- Motion detection
- Event history tracking
- Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) controls
Greater Choice for Users, Easier Integration for Developers
With SmartThings adopting Matter 1.5, camera manufacturers can now launch Matter-based cameras that integrate seamlessly with SmartThings—without the need for customized APIs. This significantly reduces development complexity while accelerating product launches.
Samsung has collaborated with global IoT leaders such as Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam to develop Matter-compatible cameras, with the first products expected to roll out from March 2026.
SmartThings already works with major camera brands including Aqara, Arlo, Hue, Ring, and others across multiple protocols. The addition of Matter cameras gives users even more flexibility and choice within a single, unified ecosystem.
Smarter Security and Personalized Home Automation
Integrating cameras into SmartThings enables users to build safer and more personalized smart homes. Key benefits include:
- Monitoring homes remotely while traveling
- Keeping an eye on pets and family members
- Creating customized routines linked with smart doorbells and other devices
These capabilities enhance both convenience and peace of mind for SmartThings users worldwide.
Samsung SmartThings Strengthens Industry Leadership
Samsung continues to expand its global partnerships through an open-platform strategy. Under the Works With SmartThings (WWST) certification program, SmartThings now supports over 4,700 device models from more than 390 partner brands. By rapidly adopting the Matter standard, Samsung has helped bring 58 Matter device types into everyday smart home usage.
With Matter 1.5 camera support, Samsung SmartThings takes another major step toward a truly interoperable, secure, and future-ready smart home ecosystem.
