Verstappen Seals Dominant Azerbaijan GP Win as Sainz Secures Historic Podium for Williams
Baku, Azerbaijan – September 21, 2025: Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen delivered a flawless performance at the 2025 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, storming to victory by almost 15 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell. The Dutchman also claimed his sixth career grand chelem, cementing his dominance this season.
In one of the standout stories of the weekend, Carlos Sainz clinched third place, giving Williams its first podium finish in four years. Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for championship leader Oscar Piastri, who crashed out on the opening lap, and frustration for Lando Norris, who could only manage seventh after a slow pit stop.
Verstappen controlled the race from pole, surviving an early Safety Car period caused by Piastri’s crash. Once the race resumed, the Red Bull driver pulled clear of Sainz and never looked back. Russell, after strong mid-race pace, secured second, while young Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli impressed in fourth.
Further down, Liam Lawson produced a career-best P5 for Racing Bulls, holding off team-mate Yuki Tsunoda in sixth. Norris, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar completed the top 10 points scorers.
Verstappen’s victory in Baku now places him level with Lewis Hamilton for total grand chelems and just two behind the all-time record of Jim Clark, underlining his status as one of Formula 1’s modern greats.
