Marc Marquez Inherits Catalan Sprint Win After Alex Marquez Crashes Out
Barcelona, Spain – September 6, 2025: Marc Marquez’s remarkable unbeaten run in the 2025 MotoGP Tissot Sprint races continued at the Monster Energy Grand Prix of Catalonia, but the eight-time World Champion was gifted victory after his younger brother Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing) crashed out while leading by more than a second.
The #93 Ducati Lenovo rider secured his 14th Sprint win of the season, crossing the line 1.2 seconds clear of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), who claimed silver. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) completed the podium with a composed ride to P3, breaking away from a thrilling KTM scrap in the closing stages.
Explosive Opening Lap at Barcelona
The Sprint began with fireworks as Alex Marquez got the holeshot into Turn 1. Behind him, Quartararo, Marc Marquez, and rookie Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) went three-wide in a breathtaking opening sequence. Quartararo muscled through to snatch P2, while Marc Marquez and Acosta exchanged bold moves before the Ducati man reasserted himself into third.
By mid-race, Alex Marquez stretched his advantage to 1.3 seconds, looking untouchable at the front, while Quartararo and Marc Marquez jostled over second. Further back, Di Giannantonio and the KTM duo of Acosta and Brad Binder, plus Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3), staged one of the most entertaining battles of the Sprint.
Heartbreak for Alex Marquez
Just as victory seemed certain, Alex Marquez’s hopes evaporated on Lap 9 at Turn 10, where a front-end washout sent him sliding into the gravel. His crash handed the race lead — and ultimately the win — to Marc Marquez, who controlled proceedings to the chequered flag.
Quartararo settled for second, marking a crucial return to form for Yamaha, while Di Giannantonio earned a deserved third after shaking off Acosta’s late challenge.
