FIA Extends Multi-Year Agreement with Formula E, Securing the Future of All-Electric Motorsport
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body of motorsport and mobility organizations, has announced a multi-year extension of its agreement with Formula E Holdings Limited (majority-owned by Liberty Global) for the continued promotion of the FIA Formula E World Championship.
This landmark extension cements Formula E’s role as the premier all-electric single-seater racing series and reinforces its position at the forefront of global motorsport innovation, sustainability, and fan engagement.
Driving the Future of Motorsport
With the agreement in place, Formula E will accelerate its growth trajectory, attract new investment, expand its global presence, and pave the way for sustainable innovation in the wider automotive industry.
The Championship’s phased development strategy for future race cars includes:
- Faster top speeds and acceleration
- Improved aerodynamics and tyre performance
- Greater relevance to the EV consumer market through race-to-road technology transfer
These advancements showcase Formula E’s unique role in bridging elite motorsport and the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) sector, projected to account for over 40% of global car sales by 2030.
GEN3 Evo: Raising the Bar in Electric Racing
The recently launched Formula E GEN3 Evo car highlights the series’ technological edge:
- 0–60mph in just 1.82 seconds (30% faster than Formula 1)
- 200mph top speed
- 50% of race energy regenerated during competition
- Tyres with 35% recycled material and bodywork from recycled carbon fibre and natural fibres
This innovation underscores Formula E’s dual commitment to elite racing performance and sustainability.
A Global Motorsport Success Story
Since its debut in Beijing in 2014, Formula E has grown into a global sporting phenomenon, achieving:
- A 20% annual growth rate in fanbase, now reaching ~400 million fans worldwide
- A TV audience of half a billion
- Participation from 11 world-class teams and 22 elite drivers
- Races in iconic cities including Monaco, London, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Miami
Formula E also leads in sustainability, being ranked the world’s #1 ESG sport for three consecutive years, reducing freight emissions, and funding community legacy projects through its Better Future Fund.
