TATA.ev Releases India Charging Report 2025, Highlighting Rapid EV Growth and Charging Network Expansion
TATA.ev has unveiled the India Charging Report 2025, offering a comprehensive look at the nation’s fast-evolving electric mobility landscape. The report captures record EV adoption rates, a quadrupling of public charging infrastructure, and a growing sense of consumer confidence — while also outlining the challenges that must be addressed to sustain momentum.
India’s EV Adoption at Record Levels
According to the report, EVs are now present in 65% of India’s pin codes, with 84% used as primary vehicles. Owners drive their EVs 1,600 km per month on average, covering over 95% of India’s roads. Nearly half of EV owners have taken trips of 500+ km, signalling growing trust in EV performance and charging availability.
Charging Infrastructure Expands 4x
Public charging stations have grown fourfold to 24,000 units, with 91% of National Highways now having a charger within 50 km. Thirteen states and union territories have achieved 100% highway charging coverage, marking a major milestone in long-distance EV travel.
Data-Driven Charger Placement
TATA.ev leverages advanced spatial analysis, using hexbin mapping and GPS data to identify charging gaps and optimise placement across cities and highways. This targeted approach improves accessibility and ensures chargers are positioned where drivers need them most.
Utilisation and Commercial Viability
The top 25% of public chargers are already profitable, while 35% of EV owners use fast charging monthly. In the past 15 months, TATA.ev and its partners have added 18,000 chargers, with 77% of owners taking trips requiring public charging.
Challenges Still to Overcome
Despite rapid growth, the report notes persistent issues — nearly 50% of public chargers remain non-functional at any given time, and problems with fragmented discovery and payment systems hinder user experience.
TATA.ev’s User-Centric Solutions
To address these challenges, TATA.ev has introduced:
- .ev Verified chargers to ensure reliability.
- Unified payment systems to simplify transactions.
- A dedicated call centre for customer support.
- 120 kW MegaChargers planned for 500 locations by 2027, designed to dramatically improve charging speed and convenience.
The India Charging Report 2025 makes it clear: India’s shift to sustainable, electric mobility is accelerating, powered by technology, strategic partnerships, and consumer trust. Yet, continued progress depends on improving reliability, interoperability, and convenience — the cornerstones of a truly nationwide EV ecosystem.
